LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Blake Lively is facing intense backlash on social media after a clip of her making a cruel joke about her 'Gossip Girl' co-star Leighton Meester resurfaced over social media, the Daily Mail reported on Tuesday, January 14.

The video in question went viral on TikTok, and has been circulating on other platforms as well. It shows Lively, 37, seated next to Meester, 38, during an undated panel discussion. The pair starred in the CW series 'Gossip Girl' over its six-season run from 2007 to 2012.

What was Blake Lively's joke on Leighton Meester?

Lively is seen saying animatedly in the clip, "Well, some of us started in a cage," as she waves her hand in Meester's direction. The statement was not well received by the audience, as she adds, "Come on, it was a joke! Lord have mercy."

To put the quip in perspective, Meester was born while her mother Constance was incarcerated on drug charges.

According to the publication, Constance served 10 years in a Texas state prison after being convicted in 1985 on drug trafficking charges. She was reportedly involved in a drug smuggling ring that brought large quantities of marijuana to the United States from Jamaica.

While working together on CW teen drama, Lively and Meester played the roles of Serena van der Woodsen and Blair Waldorf, respectively. The series focused on the life of a group of wealthy teens on New York City's Upper East Side.

After the series was over, executive producer Joshua Safran revealed in an interview that Lively and Meester were not as close as their on-screen counterparts.

"They were friendly, but they were not friends like Serena and Blair," he stated, claiming that they had very different personalities.
