Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s daughter Shiloh officially drops dad’s last name after 'painful events'
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Shiloh Jolie, the 18-year-old daughter of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt has officially changed her name, dropping 'Pitt' from her surname.
The teenager, born Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, will now legally go by the name Shiloh Jolie.
Shiloh Jolie's legal filing to drop her surname
Shiloh Jolie first filed for the name change on her 18th birthday in May 2024.
Her petition to drop 'Pitt' from her surname faced a delay in July when a scheduled court hearing was postponed due to an incomplete background check.
Her lawyer, Peter Levine, explained at the time that the court had rescheduled the hearing for August 19 due to a clerical error, according to People.
"Everyone undergoing a name-change request needs to have a background check conducted by the court clerk, and because of clerical error, Shiloh's hearing has been continued to a new date," he noted in a statement.
As part of California's legal process for a name change, Shiloh was required to publish an announcement in the Los Angeles Times for one month, a step she completed in July.
This public notice is mandated by state law before a judge can approve a name change petition.
Shiloh Jolie's name changing decision and its significance
Shiloh Jolie is one of six children shared by Angelina Jolie, 49, and Brad Pitt, 60. Her siblings include Maddox, 22, Pax, 20, Zahara, 19, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 16.
The couple's highly publicized separation and ongoing legal disputes have already been the subject of public interest.
Her lawyer Levine emphasized the importance of respecting Shiloh's autonomy in the matter of dropping her father's last name, criticizing media coverage that he felt was insensitive.
"The media should be more careful in their reporting, especially when covering a young adult who has made an independent and significant decision following painful events, and is merely following legal process," Levine said at the time.
Brad Pitt 'upset' by Shiloh Jolie's name-altering decision
A source close to Brad Pitt revealed that the actor is "aware" of Shiloh Jolie's decision to drop his last name.
“He’s aware and upset that Shiloh dropped his last name," noted the insider.
"The reminders that he’s lost his children, is of course not easy for Brad. He loves his children and misses them," the source added.
