CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA: As Valentine's Day dawned, Republican presidential contender Nikki Haley took a playful jab at her former boss, Donald Trump, by crafting satirical "love letters" purportedly from him to various dictators across the globe.

The move, orchestrated by Haley's campaign, aimed to highlight Trump's controversial affinity for authoritarian leaders, showcasing snippets of his past remarks.

"Happy Valentine’s Day from Donald Trump to dictators around the world! Over the years, Trump has professed his love for the world’s most brutal dictators and praised their strength and leadership skills," the Haley campaign declared in a statement.

Drawing from Trump's own words, the campaign unveiled a series of acerbic missives directed at some of the United States' top adversaries. "Roses are red. Violets are blue. I love dictators & they love me too," quipped the first letter, seemingly from Trump himself.

Reacting swiftly, Trump's camp dismissed Haley's move as a triviality, with spokesperson Steven Cheung deriding her as "Nikki ‘Birdbrain’ Haley."

“Nikki ‘Birdbrain’ Haley has a minor league brain in a major league world. She is simply too stupid to comprehend that President Trump brought peace and prosperity to the country,” Cheung told the New York Post. “Meanwhile, Haley wants to bow down to China and throw America into forever wars.”

Among the scathing notes, one addressed to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un referenced Trump's infamous remark about receiving "beautiful letters" from Kim, expressing a bizarre camaraderie between the two leaders. “He [Kim] wrote me beautiful letters, and they’re great letters. We fell in love,” the “Valentine” letter read.

Similarly, a note praising Chinese President Xi Jinping for his authoritarian rule echoed Trump's past endorsements of Xi's leadership prowess, despite occasional tough talk on China. “He’s strong like granite, he’s strong, I know him very well, President Xi of China … what can I say: he runs 1.4 billion people with an iron hand,” the card read.

Trump's admiration extended even to the Taliban, noted by another "love letter" acknowledging their prowess as fighters, a sentiment he voiced during the tumultuous events surrounding the collapse of the Afghan government in 2021.

“The Taliban, good fighters, I will tell you, good fighters. You have to give them credit for that. They’ve been fighting for a thousand years. What they do is they fight,” the letter stated, quoting Trump's past remarks.

Furthermore, a missive congratulating Russian President Vladimir Putin on his election victory highlighted Trump's defiance against criticism for cozying up to autocrats. “I called President Putin of Russia to congratulate him on his election victory. The Fake News Media is crazed because they wanted me to excoriate him. They are wrong!” the card addressed to Putin said.

Internet reacts

Despite Haley's attempt to lampoon Trump's diplomatic dalliances, social media users promptly turned the tables on her, questioning her seriousness as a candidate and urging her to withdraw from the race.

"Wow..can she get any worse?" one posted on X.

"I love the military-industrial complex, and they love me. Nikki Haley," another quipped.

"I’m glad she revealed herself as an unserious person," someone else added.

"Why hasn't she dropped out yet," another wondered.

Nonetheless, Haley remains a significant figure in the Republican field, positioning herself as Trump's principal challenger in the 2024 primaries. With Trump dominating polls and securing victories in key contests, including the upcoming South Carolina primary, Haley faces an uphill battle to secure the nomination.

In the event of Trump securing the Republican nod, Haley has signaled her intention to support him in the general election against President Biden.
