WASHINGTON, DC: Vice President Kamala Harris made her highly anticipated campaign debut in a televised interview with CNN’s Dana Bash, but the aftermath has been anything but smooth.

The interview, which aired on Thursday night, August 29, marked Harris’ first major media appearance since announcing her campaign, but critics argue that the discussion fell short of expectations, as per Fox News.

The segment opened with a polished montage that resembled a movie trailer, setting the stage for what many hoped would be a substantive conversation.

However, as the interview progressed, viewers were left with the impression that the questions posed by Bash were less rigorous than expected, leading to accusations of a "softball" approach.

Bash did tackle some pressing issues, but her line of questioning and Harris's responses were seen by many as lacking in depth.

For instance, Bash addressed Harris’s shifting stance on fracking, a topic that has drawn considerable attention.

In 2019, Harris publicly supported a ban on fracking, a position that resonated with many environmental advocates. However, in a recent pivot, Harris has retreated from that stance, now expressing that she no longer supports an outright ban.

When asked by Bash to explain the change, Harris offered a somewhat vague justification.

She emphasized the importance of addressing climate change while maintaining a thriving clean energy economy, but she didn’t provide a clear reason for her shift in policy.

"What I have seen is that we can grow and we can increase a thriving clean energy economy without banning fracking," Harris said.

Another critical moment in the interview came when Bash questioned Harris about the record number of illegal border crossings that have occurred since she and President Joe Biden took office.

In her response, Harris claimed, "What I did to address the root causes of illegal immigration has resulted in a number of benefits, including historic investments by American businesses in that region. The number of immigrants coming from that region has actually reduced since we’ve began that work."

As the interview continued, Bash posed a question that further fueled accusations of a "softball" approach. She asked Harris how voters should interpret her shifting policy positions, offering Harris multiple-choice options to respond with.

"How should voters look at some of the changes you’ve made that you explained some of here in your policy?" Bash asked.

"Because you’ve had more experience now and you have learned more about the information? Is it running for president in a Democratic primary? And should they feel comfortable and confident that what you say now is going to be your policy moving forward?" she added.

Harris’s response was meandering and lacked clarity, but she maintained that her core values remained unchanged.

Dana Bash's line of questioning sparks accusations of 'softball' interview

Users on social media were quick to express their disappointment with the interview, particularly with Bash’s line of questioning.

On X, a person remarked, "They had Dana Bash spoon-feeding answers to softball questions, with Tim Walz chaperoning, and Kamala still have a nonsense answer. This is why they don’t want her doing more interviews."

Another said, "What a fool Dana Bash turn out to be. Lobbing soft ball questions one after another. Dana u had the chance of a lifetime to get an interview the whole country needed to see and u FAILED. You failed to ask the tough questions. I’ve been asked tougher questions on job interviews."

"Let’s play SOFT BALL with Kamala Dana Bash asks Kamala why she’s constantly flip flopped on her positions, then proceeds to offer her multiple choice answers," wrote one person.

Another added, "Dana Bash is tossing soft ball questions in a tape delayed and edited 2v1 interview and Kamala is getting wrecked. The debate with Trump is going to be must see tv."

One person wrote, "Even though Dana Bash throws Kamala Harris softball questions, she still screws up. Do you know what this reminds me of? The Miss America pageant winner who didn’t know how to answer."

Another pointed out, "Dana Bash was tossing slow, underhand pitches to Kamabla and Tampon Tim, and they both still struck out. Pathetic! Maybe she should have asked them only yes or no questions."

A user wrote, "Dana Bash threw one softball after another without follow-ups." Lastly, a user said, "Dana Bash sucks. This wasn't softball, this was tee ball."
