CNN panel gets heated while discussing consequences of Iran war: 'Stop the talking points'
WASHINGTON, DC: A panel discussion on CNN’s ‘NewsNight’ turned intense when the topic of the Iran war was raised. The US, along with Israel, waged war against Tehran in late February.
President Donald Trump justified the war by saying he took the step to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. He also asserted that he attacked Iran for regime change. However, even after weeks of violence, neither objective appears to have been achieved, nor has any resolution emerged.
Though the war killed several of Iran’s top military and political leaders, it also led to the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz by the Islamic nation, resulting in global energy prices skyrocketing.
John Avlon says airstrikes alone cannot achieve regime change in Iran
Amid the uncertainty, John Avlon, a former Democratic congressional candidate from New York, said on ‘NewsNight’ on Wednesday, April 29, that “regime change is never achieved by air power alone.”
But he was immediately interrupted by Scott Jennings, a GOP consultant, who said, “Oh yeah? What about when you throw in their navy? Does that help?”
“Scott. Scott, just for one second! Stop the talking points,” Avlon replied. But Jennings hit back, “A blockade is a talking point?”
John Avlon warns war is easy to start but hard to end
To which Avlon responded: “It is easy to blunder into war, but it is very hard to get out of it. And that's why our allies are saying, 'We're not with the US on this,' because no case was made.”
“That's why the war is unpopular at home, because no case has been made,” he added.
This was not the first time the Iran war has been criticized. Many Democrats, along with some Trump allies, have spoken against it.
Tucker Carlson slams Trump over Iran war
Once a supporter of the president, even Tucker Carlson has expressed frustration over the ongoing war.
Without directly naming Trump, Carlson spoke in the third person, saying, “They’ve never looked inward once in 10 years. And now they’ve reached the point of maximum frustration, where the biggest thing they’ve ever done, which is try to regime-change the Iranian government, and it hasn’t worked.”
“That’s the biggest thing they’ve ever done. They staked everything on that. And you should just know that at this point, now that that’s not working out, they will not be mad at themselves. They’re gonna be mad at you for not liking it or appreciating it,” he asserted.
The conservative commentator also accused Trump of failing and not doing “a good job running this country.” “You don’t even care to try. You’d rather run the world or the empire,” he added.
