WASHINGTON, DC: The loss of Rep Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) in the Democratic primary elections near the end of June bears worrying signs for progressive members of the party as the United States heads for general elections in November.

The congressman is the first member of the 'Squad' to have been ousted from the House of Representatives, reported the Daily Mail. The publication claims that his anti-Israel rhetoric during the ally nation's war against Gaza may have led to his dismissal by voters.

Bowman was one of the loudest pro-Palestinian lawmakers on Capitol Hill and had joined demonstrations on the streets of New York. He called for cutting off aid to Israel and accused the country of committing genocide.

While he enjoyed the backing of 'Squad' founder Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, her efforts were not enough to secure his reelection into Congress.

Which other progressive Congresspersons risk dismissal?

The members of the Progressive Squad have demonstrated staunch support for Palestinians throughout the conflict with Israel, hosting events and being out on the streets to make their voices heard on the issue.

As such, a few of them are finding themselves in murky waters when it comes to being reelected, according to the Daily Mail.

Rep Cori Bush (D-Mo), who supported the 'Gaza Solidarity Encampment' at George Washington University earlier this year, is now seen locked in stiff competition with St Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Wesley Bell, according to a recent poll. The fact comes as a surprise as Bush was slated to have an easy victory according to polls conducted at the beginning of the year.

Ilhan Omar (D-Minn) is the second squad member who is expected to face tough competition, from former city councilman Don Samuels, who lost to her by just two points in 2022. The latter has been arguing in his campaign that Omar focuses too much on issues abroad like the Israel-Hams war and does not spend enough time fighting for constituents.

While Bush and Omar have their primary fights ahead of them, Squad members Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, and Reps Greg Casar of Texas and Summer Lee of Pennsylvania have succeeded in cruising through the primary and securing the Democratic ticket for the general election in November.

Internet reacts to challenges faced by Progressive 'Squad' members

Reacting to the news on the website of the Daily Mail, a reader stated, "This woke pendulum has swung too far, and hopefully will swing back to a less hate filled, and more acceptable level."

"Really wanted AOC and Tlaib gone, but Omar and Bush, with already defeated Bowman, is a good first step," wrote another.

"They’ve all lived well and enhanced their bank account. Times up, send them packing," slammed a third.

"The concern needs to be as to where and why the Voters elected them in the first place," commented a fourth.

"Time to clean the house," quipped a fifth.
