During his acceptance speech, Beckham thanked Cruise, who attended the ceremony and was seated among the guests. Recalling his childhood, he said, “The cinema was a huge treat for me and my sisters, and like all boys my age, I was obsessed with action heroes."
He continued, “So, to stand here in front of my friend Tom Cruise, the greatest movie star of our time, is quite frankly mind-blowing." He also revealed that his first movie date with wife Victoria was watching 'Jerry Maguire,' calling it a “pretty mad full-circle moment.”
He then expressed gratitude for Cruise’s friendship, noting that the actor welcomed his family to Los Angeles two decades ago. “Tom, I am so grateful for your friendship. You welcomed us to LA 20 years ago, and you have been a loyal friend and an inspiration to me ever since."
He added, “Your energy, professionalism and commitment to what you love and to your audience is unrivalled, and I am so honored that you are here today with me.” Beckham also reflected on his long-standing connection with the United States, saying, “The more I saw, the more I became obsessed with America, its stars and especially its sports.”
He added, “In the USA, sports was box office entertainment. I love the ambition, the scale, the sheer entertainment value of US sports. But to achieve my dreams, I knew I would one day make the leap across the pond to make the US my second home."

Cruise also took to the stage to honor Beckham’s achievements, recalling one of the most memorable moments of his football career. He described his famous goal for Manchester United against Wimbledon 30 years ago, when the midfielder scored from just behind the halfway line with a strike that travelled 57 yards through the air.
Cruise said the ball was airborne for only three and a half seconds, but the moment has "remained etched in sporting history for three decades."
Beckham also spoke on his own connection with the US. He recalled first visiting America at the age of 16 on a soccer tour to Dallas and later travelling to Los Angeles during the 1994 FIFA World Cup, noting that despite England not qualifying for the tournament, he was excited to experience what he called “the greatest show on earth.”
Looking ahead to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, he said it was "a powerful moment to recognize how the sport I love so much has grown in this country over the past three decades.”
Beckham later said, “To see soccer in this country finally take its place on the main stage makes me extremely proud of the small part that I have played, and I truly believe that it can only get bigger and better.” He also spoke about building his own team in Miami and having “the greatest player in the world” on the squad.
