David Gail's cause of death revealed as mom warns about dangers of opioid addiction in battle against pain
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: The tragic death of 'Port Charles' actor David Gail last month at the age of 58 has been attributed to complications arising from drug intoxication, including powerful opioid fentanyl.
Gail's mother, Mary Painter, has since come forward to raise awareness about the dangers of pharmaceutical addiction and the opioid epidemic.
David Gail's cause of death revealed
According to reports, Gail's official cause of death was determined to be anoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, a brain injury resulting from lack of blood flow, following resuscitation from cardio pulmonary arrest triggered by drug intoxication. The toxicology report revealed the presence of amphetamines, cocaine, ethanol, and fentanyl in his system.
"It breaks my heart to learn that my son died this way," Painter expressed in a statement to Deadline. She elaborated on Gail's struggles with pharmaceutical dependence, which stemmed from chronic pain following multiple surgeries on his hands and wrists.
Despite efforts to manage his pain through alternative methods like acupuncture and natural medicines, Gail reportedly turned to self-medication from uncontrolled sources.
Gail, who hailed from Tampa, Florida, embarked on an acting career after working in the finance sector. He made his mark in Hollywood with notable roles in television series like 'Beverly Hills, 90210', and the General Hospital spin-off 'Port Charles', where he portrayed Dr Joe Scanlon for over 200 episodes.
In her statement, Painter emphasized that Gail's tragic death serves as a stark reminder of the widespread impact of pharmaceutical addiction and the fentanyl crisis, urging others to keep individuals battling pain or dependence in their thoughts and prayers.
“David’s death shines a light on the countless innocent victims of pharmaceutical addiction and the fentanyl epidemic that has taken so many of our sons and daughters,” the actor’s mother said. “Please keep David and others battling pain or dependence, in your thoughts and prayers.”
Survived by his son Guthier and sister Kathryn Gail, the family has requested privacy during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, they encourage donations to be made in Gail's name to Partnership To End Addiction.
"We are extremely touched by the outpouring of love from David’s dedicated fans and colleagues," Painter expressed. "We are grateful for all the support received during this very difficult time."
