David Schwimmer reveals he once ‘swooped in’ to serve Rod Stewart his divorce papers
MANHATTAN, NEW YORK: David Schwimmer, best known for playing Ross Geller in 'Friends', recently revealed a surprising and hilariously awkward chapter of his life involving Rod Stewart.
During his appearance on 'The Late Show With Stephen Colbert', the actor opened up about one of the many unique jobs he had in his late teens—one that involved giving bad news.
David Schwimmer recalls summer job as process server for his mother
“One summer after my freshman year in college, I was just looking for work, and my mom said, ‘Well, you can be a process server for me'," David Schwimmer shared.
As a divorce lawyer, his mother enlisted him to deliver legal papers to unsuspecting individuals.
The now-57-year-old actor quipped, “I was the guy who would pop out of the bushes and serve you divorce papers.”
Reflecting on his covert role, Schwimmer joked that he felt like a young James Bond. “I’d get ‘tipped off’ on where people might be, and then I’d swoop in to serve them.”
But one particular “mission” stands out in his memory to this day.
“Once, oh man, thank goodness I’ve never run into him since, but I served Rod Stewart,” Schwimmer admitted with a laugh. “I don’t even know if he knows. I don’t think he knows.”
Host Stephen Colbert couldn’t resist teasing him, warning, “He knows now. Change your locks, man. He’s vengeful.”
Colbert added with mock seriousness, “You could theoretically run into Rod Stewart sometime, and now he knows to punch you.”
Although Schwimmer didn’t clarify which of Stewart’s divorces the incident was related to, the timeline suggests it could have been during the British icon’s split from his first wife, Alana Stewart, in 1984.
That same year, Schwimmer, then 18, would have been spending his summer mastering the art of stealthy legal service.
Schwimmer was on Colbert's show to promote his latest project, 'Goosebumps: The Vanishing', the second season of the Disney + anthology series, 'Goosebumps'.
Rod Stewart’s relationship timeline
Rod Stewart, known as much for his string of hits as his high-profile relationships, has had a few notable splits over the years, per Hello!
Susannah Boffey (1960s): His first serious relationship was with Susannah Boffey, a fellow art student in the 1960s. The pair had a daughter, Sarah Streeter, in 1963, but they gave her up for adoption as they were both very young and unprepared to become parents. Stewart and Sarah reconnected years later, and now they share a close bond.
Dee Harrington (1965–1975): He then dated British model Dee Harrington during the 1960s and 1970s. The pair had a serious relationship, but they ultimately parted ways as Rod’s career began to skyrocket, creating strain in their relationship.
Britt Ekland (1975–1977): Stewart had a high-profile romance with Swedish actress Britt Ekland, known for her roles in 'James Bond' films. Their relationship was famously passionate but also tumultuous. Britt later claimed Stewart was controlling during their time together, which he has denied.
Alana Hamilton (1979–1984): Stewart married actress and model Alana Hamilton (ex-wife of actor George Hamilton) in 1979. The couple had two children together, Kimberly Stewart and Sean Stewart. They divorced in 1984, with their busy lifestyles and his growing fame contributing to the split.
Kelly Emberg (1983–1990): After his split from Alana, he began a relationship with American model Kelly Emberg. They never married but were together for seven years and had one daughter, Ruby Stewart, born in 1987.
Rachel Hunter (1990–2006): He then married New Zealand supermodel Rachel Hunter in 1990 when she was just 21, and he was 45. The age difference raised eyebrows, but the couple had a seemingly happy marriage for a time. They had two children, Renee Stewart (1992) and Liam Stewart (1994). The couple separated in 1999 but didn’t finalize their divorce until 2006.
Penny Lancaster (2001–present): Stewart began dating Penny Lancaster, a British model and photographer, in 2001. They married in 2007 in a romantic ceremony in Italy. The couple has two sons, Alastair Stewart (2005) and Aiden Stewart (2011).
