Democrats accuse Joe Biden of 'quiet quitting' as he vanishes from public eye: 'There is a total vacuum'
WASHINGTON, DC: Several Democrats are criticizing current President Joe Biden for "quiet quitting" as he has cut down on public appearances with just a month and few days left to his term.
The 82-year-old has also taken very few questions from the press and has stopped criticizing President-elect Donald Trump, who he had earlier warned during the campaign cycle was a "threat to democracy," according to Daily Mail.
Democrats accuse Joe Biden of 'quiet quitting' before end of term
On the Tuesday, December 17 episode of the 'Pod Save America' podcast, host Tommy Vietor, made the "quiet quitting" quip, and said, "Yeah, that seems like what he’s doing."
Quiet quitting is described as a trend where employees disengage from their jobs, performing the bare minimum of their duties and not taking any extra initiatives.
The former Barack Obama aide further expressed, "It's just odd that, you know, he talked about Donald Trump being an existential threat to democracy for so long."
On the episode, Vietor and his fellow 'Pod Save America' hosts, Jon Favreau and Jon Lovett, discussed a recent Politico article titled, "Biden shrinks from view ahead of Trump’s return to Washington," which explores Biden's recent disappearance from public view.
A Democrat close to senior lawmakers complained to the outlet, "There is no leadership coming from the White House. There is a total vacuum."
A different source said, "In conversations that I'm having, they don't even mention the president. It feels like Trump is president already."
Interestingly, Biden is yet to schedule a post-election press conference, with White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre not committing the president to the traditional back-and-forth, per Daily Mail.
Politico mentioned that during his two recent trips abroad - to Peru for APEC and onto Brazil for the G20 and then a separate trip to Angola - Biden said just seven words to the press.
Sources say Joe Biden doesn't 'owe much more' to the Democratic Party
Sources informed Politico that Joe Biden's "reticence is rooted in two factors: Biden’s own recognition that few are eager to hear from him, and his own lingering personal belief that he doesn’t owe much more to a party that unceremoniously pushed him aside."
Despite being the oldest president in American history and polls showing that Americans had major old-age concerns, Biden announced a reelection bid on April 25, 2023.
He eventually dropped out of the race on July 21, 2024, after a disastrous debate performance against Trump, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris to be the nominee.
As per Politico, some aides have also said the POTUS believes he has to take a more measured approach in how he talks about the president-elect as he would like to focus on facilitating a peaceful transfer of power.
On the podcast, Vietor said, "There's all these things you could do that really would be historic and important. And when you're unencumbered by politics, why not run through the tape?"
Meanwhile, White House spokesperson Andrew Bates defended Biden, saying he "is making every day of this term count" and is "leading by example for the sake of American democracy, honoring his campaign promise to respect the will of the voters and provide an orderly transition."
Internet trolls Joe Biden as Democrats accuse him of 'quiet quitting'
Netizens were quick to mock Joe Biden as Democrats accused him of "quiet quitting" ahead of Donald Trump's return to the White House.
Some online comments read "How is Joe taking fewer questions from the press? I didn't know that was even possible considering how he's never answered questions," and "President-Elect Trump will do 100% better job than Biden (granted, Biden didn't set the bar very high). He will show up and lead."
A person claimed, "He's quietly quitting today after spending 4 years at his mansions and beach. He's never been president, and Democrats are totally cool with unnamed people running the government."
One more mentioned, "Biden never cared about this country, or its citizens. It was always about the power and perks of the office. He dropped that facade as soon as Kamala became the nominee."
"He may feel he doesn't owe the Democratic party, but surely he owes the US people a president until his term expires," pointed out an individual.
Another person remarked, "A big ZERO from day one, so what's the difference? And now since his cognitive decline has gotten worse than it was when he was elected, someone else is continuing to call the shots."
