Democrats launch impeachment push against Hegseth over Iran war conduct
WASHINGTON, DC: House Democrats, on Wednesday, April 15, have formally moved to impeach Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, laying out a sweeping set of allegations tied to military operations and internal Pentagon decisions.
The effort, led by Yassamin Ansari, centers on claims of misconduct during the Iran conflict and concerns about leadership.
While the resolution is unlikely to advance in the current House, it marks a significant escalation in Democratic criticism.
Dems push 6 impeachment articles
The impeachment resolution presents six separate accusations, collectively arguing that Hegseth’s actions amount to “high crimes and misdemeanors.”
At the core of the filing are claims that he oversaw an unauthorized military campaign linked to Iran and placed American service members at risk.
Lawmakers also allege violations of the law of armed conflict, including incidents involving civilian casualties.
One such episode cited in the resolution is a February strike in Iran that reportedly hit a girls’ school.
Additional articles focus on the handling of sensitive military information, including the use of a private messaging platform to discuss operational details, as well as accusations of blocking congressional oversight into military actions in regions such as Iran and Venezuela.
The resolution further claims Hegseth misused his authority and damaged the credibility of the armed forces, including in relation to alliances like NATO.
Hegseth's impeachment unlikely for now
Despite the breadth of the allegations, the impeachment effort faces long odds in the current Congress, where Republicans hold a majority.
That makes passage in the House unlikely in the near term.
Still, Democrats backing the move have signaled that the effort is not just symbolic.
Some have suggested the articles could be revisited if control of the chamber shifts after the upcoming elections.
Ansari, who has previously criticized the administration’s approach to Iran, framed the move as a response to what she described as escalating rhetoric and actions tied to the conflict.
Trump is escalating a devastating, illegal war, threatening massive war crimes and targeting civilian infrastructure in Iran. In the last 48 hours alone, the rhetoric has crossed every line. Pete Hegseth is complicit.
