WASHINGTON, DC: In a surprising move, Representative Matt Gaetz, a fierce critic of President Joe Biden, recently came to the defense of his son Hunter Biden following his conviction on federal gun charges this week, as reported by The New Republic.

The unexpected remarks from the Florida Republican provided Hunter Biden with an unlikely ally and intensified the growing online debate. Many have criticized the trial as a "dog and pony show" intended to create an illusion of balance within the justice system.

Matt Gaetz downplays Hunter Biden's recent conviction on federal gun charges

On Tuesday, June 11, Hunter Biden was found guilty of lying about his drug use on a federal form, lying to a gun dealer, and illegally possessing a firearm. However, Gaetz, a Republican known for his controversial views, quickly took to social media to downplay the significance of the conviction.

"The Hunter Biden gun conviction is kinda dumb tbh," Gaetz posted on X (formerly Twitter) shortly after the ruling. This sentiment was echoed by Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, who suggested that the trial was a superficial attempt to portray the justice system as unbiased.

"Hunter Biden guilty. Yawn. The true crimes of the Biden Crime Family remain untouched. This is a fake trial trying to make the Justice system appear 'balanced.' Don’t fall for it," Kirk stated on X.

Their remarks indicate a broader strategy among some conservatives to downplay Hunter's conviction while emphasizing what they perceive as more significant, unaddressed crimes within the Biden family. This is happening amidst ongoing legal challenges facing former President Donald Trump.

President Biden, however, has maintained a firm stance, stating that he will respect the judicial process and accept the outcome of his son's trial.

In a recent interview with ABC News, Biden ruled out the possibility of a pardon for Hunter, contrasting his approach with that of Trump, whom he accused of trying to "undermine" the legal system.

After the verdict, Biden reiterated his support for his son, saying, "I will accept the outcome of this case and will continue to respect the judicial process as Hunter considers an appeal. Jill and I will always be there for Hunter and the rest of our family with our love and support. Nothing will ever change that."

Hunter's legal troubles have made him a focal point of Republican criticism. Beyond the gun charges, he has faced allegations of tax evasion and accusations of profiting from his connection to the Ukrainian energy company Burisma.

The Congressional inquiry into Hunter’s activities has faced setbacks, notably when their key informant, Alexander Smirnov, was indicted for lying to the FBI and subsequently revealed that Russian intelligence officials were involved in the smear campaign against the Bidens.

Matt Gaetz's sentiment about Hunter Biden's conviction echoes across social media

Social media erupted with a chorus of voices echoing Gaetz's sentiment about Hunter's recent conviction.

One user on X remarked, "All show considering his father can pardon Hunter at the last hour of his presidency. Dog and pony show." Another user added, "It’s all for show so the talking heads can say the justice system is fair."

A user wrote, "We need the real crimes exposed and prosecuted." Another user posted, "Agreed, ludicrous charges considering most Americans are on some form of drug and he will be guaranteed a pardon. This feels like a precedent that will be used on conservatives while he gets off with Daddy's pardon."

One user commented, "They needed the illusion of a justice balance. He was the easiest scapegoat." A user said, "Yes it is. There is absolutely no historical analog set forth by the Supreme Court under the 2022 Bruen decision that says that somebody can be denied a firearm based solely on if they are using substances."

Another user mentioned, "Of all the crimes he committed they charged him with an unconstitutional crime against his 2A civil right." Lastly, a user stated, "It's a sham charge to make a show of 'No OnE iS aBoVe ThE LaW' lie they keep pushing. Next best thing after the preferential sweetheart deal that fell apart." [sic]
