Dolly Parton defends CMA after Beyonce nomination snub, says it was not 'done on purpose'
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Dolly Parton has taken the side of the Country Music Association Awards (CMAs) after it did not nominate Beyonce for a single award despite having the biggest new country album of the year — ‘Cowboy Carter’.
The 78-year-old recently spoke with Variety where she was asked about the apparent snub faced by Queen Bey.
She said, “Well, you never know. There’s so many wonderful country artists that, I guess probably the country music field, they probably thought, well, we can’t really leave out some of the ones that spend their whole life doing that.”
Dolly Parton calls Beyonce’s album ‘wonderful’
Dolly Parton also went on to mention that she “didn’t even realize that until somebody asked me that question,” before stating, “But it was a wonderful album. She can be very, very proud of, and I think everybody in country music welcomed her and thought that, that was good.”
“So I don’t think it was a matter of shutting out, like doing that on purpose. I think it was just more of what the country charts and the country artists were doing, that do that all the time, not just a specialty album,” the ‘9 to 5’ hitmaker added.
Dolly Parton is ‘proud’ of new-age female singers, including Taylor Swift
Elsewhere in the interview, Parton praised new-age female singers, such as Sabrina Carpenter, Taylor Swift, and Chappell Roan.
She told the publication, “Oh, I just think some of these young people are absolutely amazing, and I’m just so proud that I got to start in the music business when I did.
“Or I couldn’t hold a candle to some of these young, great artists. But I’m very proud for all of them and proud of them.”
Giving a special mention to Swift, the philanthropist asserted that she “is amazing what she has done with her career. I just admire her very much and how she’s handled her business, her personal life, and what all she has meant to so many young people.”
“[She’s] been a great inspiration. And Lord knows we need some uplifting people and things this day and time. So I’m proud of all of them. I’m old enough to feel like they’re Aunt or somebody that’s kind of looking down and saying, ‘Yay, you go!’ I think they’re all great in their own way,” Parton added.
Netizens support Dolly Parton and CMA decision
Meanwhile, people online have commented on Parton’s response to the CMA-Beyonce drama.
A Facebook user wrote, “Just because Beyoncé records something doesn’t mean it deserves an award.”
Another user said, “I only heard one song that people played incessantly over and over ( from her album) and then truly got on my nerves. Like any other song that’s played too much!! No.”
The third one wrote, “I love Beyonce but she really needs to sit down and wait her turn. Her time is coming, just be more patient and thoughtful with the music, cowboy Carter was good but it wasn't groundbreaking. She has done way better.”
The fourth user stated, “So, just because she switches to country, she deserves an award right away? No. Country artists specialize in this. She sticks with it... She will get an award. She doesn't ‘deserve’ one just because of who she is. That's ludicrous.”
“The fact of the matter is, Beyoncé is not a Country And Western singer. Everybody has to realize that she wasn’t doing well with her own genre, so she tried to do the country and western music and she failed. Enough,” the fifth one added.
A comment read, “It is true. There are artists that have worked their entire careers in the genre. She needs to stick with her pop genre.”
Another comment was “I support the CMA decision, just because Beyonce is Beyonce it doesn't mean she gets nominated.”
