BUTLER, PENNSYLVANIA: Two days after escaping an attempted assassination, former President Donald Trump will be present at the Republican National Convention, according to the New York Post.
RNC chair Michael Whatley, co-chair Lara Trump, and Trump advisers Susie Wiles and Chris LaCivita said in a joint statement, “President Trump looks forward to joining you all in Milwaukee as we proceed with our convention to nominate him to serve as the 47th President of the United States. As our party’s nominee, President Trump will continue to share his vision to Make America Great Again.”
“As was communicated earlier this evening, President Trump is doing well and grateful to law enforcement and first responders for their fast action,” the statement added.
What happened during Trump’s Pennsylvania rally on Saturday night?
On Saturday, July 13, during his last rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, before the Republican National Convention (RNC) begins on Monday which will see him being officially sworn in as the 2024 GOP presidential nominee, former President Donald Trump was shot in the ear.
After gunfire rang out at the gathering, the former POTUS grabbed his face and ducked before being shielded on the ground by Secret Service agents.
The 78-year-old MAGA figurehead stood up and raised his fist in the air as he was led to his motorcade for a medical checkup at a nearby hospital.
One rallygoer was fatally shot before the Secret Service agents took out the assailant.
The schedule for former President Trump's speeches at the RNC convention has not yet been confirmed, but the event will be packed with speakers and events that will extend late into the night.
Trump’s vice presidential pick for the November ticket is expected to be announced during the convention.
The city of Milwaukee stated that over “50,000 delegates, media, law enforcement, staff, and visitors will attend the convention and related activities” in the southeastern Wisconsin city, which will continue until Thursday, July 18.
Some attendees, including those who had planned to stay at the same hotel as the ex-president, expressed concerns for their safety at the large gathering.
Access to the Milwaukee RNC center will be restricted to only those with appropriate credentials, with vehicles and pedestrians being blocked off from getting near the mega event.
The Secret Service had already been planning to establish a security perimeter, and additional protests are expected during the convention. It is unclear whether security measures will be heightened in response to the assassination attempt on Trump.
One source attending the RNC said, “It’s inconceivable that things will proceed as-is because the authorities will need time to implement enhanced protocols at the venue but also within the perimeter, at assorted official events throughout Milwaukee, and with all the state delegations.”
“It’s not just about the safety and security of a principal. You have 56 delegations arriving and departing by bus. They’re sitting ducks for any copycats who find an elevated structure somewhere,” the source claimed.
There may be adjustments in the content of speeches due to the assassination attempt, affecting what will be presented on the RNC floor.
Although speakers have already submitted their prepared remarks to the Republican Party leadership, some wish to revise their speeches in light of the significant news, as reported by the aforementioned outlet.
Following Trump's hospitalization, spokesperson Steven Cheung stated that the former president was doing “fine” and was at the hospital for a routine medical check-up.
Former President Donald Trump later said he “was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear.”
“I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening,” he wrote on Truth Social.
The 45th President of the United States offered his condolences to the rally attendee who was fatally shot and "to the family of another person that was badly injured," while thanking the Secret Service and local law enforcement officials.
