WASHINGTON, DC: GOP nominee Donald Trump announced he would "save vaping again" if he is reelected as the President of the United States this November, in a short rant on his social media platform Truth Social on Friday, September 20.

The former president claimed that restrictions put in place by his adminstration helped keep children away from electronic cigarettes back in 2019. He also alleged that his political rivals, Democratic nominee and Vice President Kamala Harris and incumbent Joe Biden wanted to ban everything and hurt small businesses.

“I saved Flavored Vaping in 2019, and it greatly helped people get off smoking,” Trump wrote in his post.

“I raised the age to 21, keeping it away from the 'kids'. Kamala and Joe want everything banned, killing small businesses all over the Country. I’ll save Vaping again!”

Donald Trump's earlier policies on vaping criticized

According to RawStory, Donald Trump's Friday post did not paint an accurate picture of his administration's stance on e-cigarettes and vaping.

Back in 2019, he shared his plan to "ban all flavored vaping products from sale in gas stations, convenience stores and e-cigarette shops", following a significant rise in their usage among teens, accompanied by an increase in lung diseases.

The plan faced significant backlash, and his administration readjusted their course. In January 2020, a limited ban on falvored e-cigarettes was announced.

A Politico report of the time stated that the move enraged anti-tobacco advocates "who called the measure a political capitulation that would cause more kids to become addicted to nicotine".

When warned that the ban would cost jobs and alienate voters, Trump softened his stance and tweeted how vaping could potentially help people stop smoking.

E-cigarettes are considered a less-harmful alternative to cigarettes and are advertised by tobacco companies as a way to help people quit smoking, with flavored vapes being most popular.

But advertising campaigns targeting teenagers led them to start using vapes, especially flavored vapes, causing concern among anit-tobacco activists.

Donald Trump trolled over his new promise

Donald Trump's post on "saving vaping" on Truth Social was trolled across social media platforms, including X (formerly Twitter).

Sharing a screengrab of the post, Midas Touch editor Ron Filipkowski tweeted, "Not sure we’ve ever had a presidential nominee run on a platform to save vaping, but at this point, he is promising everyone everything."

"We’ve gone from 'build the wall' to 'save the Juul.' What’s next? 'Ban soggy French fries'? 'Protect your right to binge-watch Netflix without judgment? Dude's rallying vapers like they’re an endangered species. Forget swing states, he’s going after cloud chasers," mocked another.

"Weed? Vaping? Who is this, Snoop Donn?" quipped a third.

"Vaping is toxic. Promoting it is absolutely on brand for Trump!" jibed a fourth user.

"Make Vaping Great Again!" trolled a fifth.

"Is he running for high school class president? So goofy," stated a sixth.

"He’s close to promising chocolate milk in all the drinking fountains," joked yet another.
