Ellen DeGeneres’ last comedy special to cover her 'being kicked out of show business' gets release date

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Ellen DeGeneres’s reportedly final comedy special has been officially named and given a release date.

The 66-year-old comedian took to her Instagram on Tuesday, September 3 to announce that her latest comedy special, titled ‘Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval’ will be released on Netflix on September 24.

The former host of ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ is returning to the small screen after being on a hiatus for more than two years. Previously, her Emmy-winning show was canceled in 2022 after the comic was embroiled in controversies regarding toxic workplace culture including accusations of intimidation, racism, and sexual misconduct, per Daily Mail.

Ellen DeGeneres is back with Netflix special

Ellen DeGeneres recently embarked on a multi-city standup ‘Ellen's Last Stand…Up Tour’ starting from San Diego in June. during that time, the comedy special, directed by Joel Gallen was filmed as well. 

Now, the show, dubbed as DeGeneres’ final comedy special of her career before she hangs her boots, has gotten the official name and a release date. 

‘For Your Approval’ becomes the second comedy special of DeGeneres’ career following her first offering, ‘Relatable’ in 2018.

After the ‘Ellen’ star was “kicked out of show business” in 2022 when her eponymous talk show ended in May 2022 following 19 seasons, DeGeneres is coming back on screen to address the controversies. 

A press release read about the comedy special, "The final comedy special of her historic career, Ellen gets personal and reveals what she’s been doing since being 'kicked out of show business,'" per USA Today.

"From the mundane world of raising chickens and parallel parking to the harsh reality of becoming a brand name celebrity, she goes deep into her stand-up roots and brings the laughs through life’s most real and absurd realities,” revealed the statement about the topics covered in the show. 

Previously, DeGeneres too talked about her latest outing. 

The comic said, “To answer the questions everyone is asking me — Yes, I’m going to talk about it. Yes, this is my last special. Yes, Portia really is that pretty in real life."

DeGeneres is producing the show along with her wife, Portia de Rossi, and Emmy-winning writer-director Ben Winston. The taping of the show took place in Minneapolis, Minnesota on August 16 and 17.

Ellen DeGeneres declares she is not ‘mean’

During one of her stand-up shows in early July, Ellen DeGeneres opened up about exiting from the spotlight. 

Taking the stage on July 1, the 34-time Emmy winner talked about exiting from the spotlight. 

When a fan asked her about a potential return to showbiz, DeGeneres revealed, "This is the last time you're going to see me. After my Netflix special, I'm done," as per Daily Mail.

She appraised her fans during the July show on what she did during her time away from the spotlight.

DeGeneres said, "Let me catch you up on what's been going on with me since you last saw me. I got chickens. Oh yeah, and I got kicked out of show business for being mean."

Remembering her heyday, she recalled, "I used to say, 'I don't care what people say about me.' Now I realize I said that during the height of my popularity."

The ‘Finding Nemo’ voice artist noted that the first time she was "kicked out of show business" was when she came out as a lesbian in 1997.

"Next time, I'll be kicked out for being old. Old, gay, and mean, the triple crown,” remarked the comedian. 

She, however, emphasized, that her intention was never to hurt anyone, saying, "I can be demanding and impatient and tough. I am a strong woman. I am many things, but I am not mean."
