LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: The entertainment world is mourning Eric Dane, whose presence on 'Grey’s Anatomy' left an indelible mark. The actor, 53, passed away on February 19 after a battle with ALS, prompting an outpouring of grief from colleagues, collaborators, and fans alike.

Network and producers honor Eric Dane’s legacy
ABC and series producer 20th Television issued a joint statement, calling Dane’s work “remarkable” and remembering the inspiration he brought both on and off set.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Eric Dane,” the statement read. “His remarkable talent and unforgettable presence on 'Grey’s Anatomy' left a lasting impact on audiences around the world, and his courage and grace during his battle with ALS inspired so many. Our hearts are with his family, friends, and colleagues, as well as the many fans whose lives were touched by his work.”
The show is expected to pay tribute to Dane in an upcoming episode when it returns from its break next week.
From guest star to beloved ‘McSteamy’
Dane first appeared on 'Grey’s Anatomy' as a guest in Season 2, quickly becoming a series regular in the following season. He played Mark Sloan, the fan-favorite plastic surgeon nicknamed “McSteamy.”
His character remained central until the Season 9 premiere, following the Season 8 plane crash that claimed Mark and Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh). Even after their deaths, the legacy lived on with Seattle Grace Mercy West renamed Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital in honor of the duo.
Castmates share heartfelt tributes
Kevin McKidd, a longtime co-star, shared a photo of the pair with the caption: “Rest In Peace Buddy…” Kim Raver also remembered Dane’s vibrant energy on Instagram, writing, “Eric was a light. You’d see it effortlessly shine from him on the set of Grey’s as well as when he was with Rebecca and the girls.”
She added, “During filming he’d get this twinkle in his eye and deliver lines with perfect comedic timing. You will be missed.” Dane’s return during the 2020–21 pandemic-themed season gave fans a touching reminder of his character’s bond with daughter Sofia.
‘Euphoria’ team mourns Dane
Sam Levinson, creator of 'Euphoria,' called Dane a dear friend. “Working with him was an honor. Being his friend was a gift,” Levinson said.
