WASHINGTON, DC: Nancy Mace had in November 2024 pushed for a resolution that would require everyone in the Capitol complex to use bathrooms based on their actual birth gender. The move had sparked a wave of headlines almost instantly. Now, a year later, a clip of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) is blowing up online.

The video shows AOC slamming Mace’s “disgusting” bathroom ban as dangerous and saying Mace's bathroom bill ban "endangers women and girls of all kinds.” The clip resurfaced on Sunday, December 7, and social media has been quite vocal about their opinions, considering the transgender issue has been simmering in the US for quite some time now.

President Donald Trump had issued a stunningly broad executive order that seeks to dismantle crucial protections for transgender people and denies the validity of gender identity itself, days after coming into power in January 2025.

Well, the question for now remains: Did AOC actually make that comment about the Bathroom Bill? And did she really slam Nancy Mace’s proposal? Let’s dig in and figure out what’s actually going on.

Claim: AOC says banning men from women's bathrooms 'endangers' girls

Australian-Lebanese podcast host and political commentator Mario Nawfal shared AOC’s video on his X  (formerly Twitter) account on December 7, and that’s what pushed the clip into wide circulation. In the video, she is seen speaking out against the bill. The video, originally from 2024, has been making the rounds online and has already racked up 44.2k views.

The same was posted by handles on X like End Wokeness and reposted by Gays for Trump

"It's disgusting. And everybody, no matter how you feel on this issue, should reject it completely. What are they doing? They're doing this so that Nancy Mace can make a buck and send a text and fundraise off an email. They're not doing this to protect people. They're endangering women. They're endangering girls of all kinds. And everybody should reject it. It's gross," AOC is heard saying in the video.

Along with AOC's quotes, Narwal wrote in the caption, "But hold up... letting biological males into girls' spaces is the real risk. There are real cases proving it, especially when trans-identifying predators exploit the policies."

Verdict: Misleading

The claim is not completely accurate and is misleading. AOC never claimed that keeping men out of women’s bathrooms “endangers girls.”

Her comments were about how Mace’s bill could be abused to target women based on appearance, not about allowing biological males into female spaces. She opposed it because, according to her, it would allow officials to target any woman based on appearance.

While AOC did publicly condemn the bathroom bill backed by Mace, the entire context of the conversation has not been mentioned in the clip.

She has consistently supported inclusive bathroom policies for transgender individuals, arguing that such bans harm trans people (including trans women and girls) by forcing them into unsafe situations.

The comments resurfaced in 2025, but they were originally made in late 2024.

AOC argued that the proposal would endanger women and girls, according to The Advocate. She said that Mace and Speaker Mike Johnson were promoting a policy they could not realistically enforce.

To provide more context, Johnson backed Mace’s rule restricting all Capitol single-sex facilities to people’s birth-assigned gender. AOC warned that the vague policy could let them target any woman based solely on appearance.

AOC asked how officials planned to carry out the rule and noted that no clear answer had been offered. At the time, she accused Mace of pushing the approach that could force women to “drop their pants” to prove their sex, as reported by the publication. Fox News also covered the controversy, confirming that she made these remarks.

AOC had reportedly shared, "And so the idea that Nancy Mace wants little girls and women to drop trou[sers] in front of who? An investigator? Who would that be? — because she wants to suspect and point fingers at who she thinks is trans is disgusting."

"It is disgusting, and frankly, all it does is allow these Republicans to go around and bully any woman who isn't wearing a skirt because they think she might not look woman enough. People have the right to express themselves, to dress how they want, and to be who they are. And if a woman doesn't look woman enough to a Republican, they want to be able to inspect her genitals to use a bathroom," she continued. "It's disgusting."

Ocasio-Cortez took a firmer stance, saying of the ban that "everybody, no matter how you feel on this issue, should reject it completely."

"Why are they doing this? They're doing this so Nancy Mace can make a buck and send a text and fundraise off an email," Ocasio-Cortez. "They're not doing this to protect people — they're endangering women, they're endangering girls of all kind and everybody should reject it. It's gross."
