LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM: In January 2026, a claim circulated online alleging that Britain’s King Charles III had reasserted British rule over “the colonies formerly known as the United States of America,” including a quote praising calls by US politicians for a return to colonialism.

Social media posts attributed an out-of-context and implausible statement to the king, prompting questions about its authenticity and origin.

Claim: King Charles III reasserts British rule over US, backs colonial return

The viral post purported to quote King Charles III saying that figures like Donald Trump, Marco Rubio and Stephen Miller were advocating a “muscular return to colonialism,” and that he agreed with them, lamenting that Britain lost “the colonies” because “our King went insane.” The wording implied a reversal of American independence.

The alleged statement referenced centuries-old history while connecting it to modern geopolitical developments, such as the US capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and renewed American interest in Greenland.

Lines like “Perhaps he could room with his old chum, my idiot brother” were included to frame it as an actual speech by the monarch. By mixing historical context with current events, the post made the claim appear timely and relevant to readers unfamiliar with satirical sources.

Fact Check: King Charles III made no statement about reasserting British rule over US

The claim is false. There is no credible evidence that King Charles III made any public statement about reasserting British rule over the United States or echoing the quote circulating online.

Searches of reputable news outlets, official royal communications, and verified media sources show no such announcement was ever made by the king or his office. The alleged quote does not appear in any official transcript, press release, or verified speech by Buckingham Palace or the British Royal Family.

The supposed quote originated from The Borowitz Report, a satirical news outlet that deliberately produces fictional political commentary for comedic effect. The Borowitz Report routinely fabricates absurd headlines, including the one claiming that Charles III had “reasserted British rule” over the United States.

If a statement of this magnitude had been made by a world leader, mainstream media outlets would have reported it widely; no such coverage exists. The rumor gained traction amid heightened attention to global politics, including the United States’ actions in Venezuela and discussions around Greenland.

These real developments created fertile ground for satire to be mistaken for reality, particularly when shared without context or verification.
