Fact Check: Did the Trump admin legalize hunting and killing Florida manatees?

WASHINGTON, DC: Recent environmental and wildlife policy decisions by the Trump administration have sparked widespread discussion online, with one viral claim drawing particular attention. 

An X post alleged that the administration has legalized the hunting and killing of the Florida manatee, a threatened species that was previously protected under the Endangered Species Act. As the claim spread across social media, many questioned whether the administration had actually lifted legal protections for the iconic marine mammal.

Claim: Trump admin legalized the killing of Florida manatees

An X post claimed that the Trump administration had legalized the hunting and killing of Florida manatees by changing rules under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).

The post, which featured an image of President Donald Trump alongside manatees, stated: "The Trump administration has legalized the hunting and killing of the Florida Manatee, a threatened species formerly protected under the Endangered Species Act."

The claim followed the administration's mid-July 2026 decision to end automatic ESA protections for newly listed threatened species and rescind the broad regulatory definition of "harm," which had previously included certain forms of habitat modification as prohibited "take."

At the time of writing, the post had amassed more than 1 million views, with hundreds of users debating whether the claim was accurate.

One user asked, "Is it legal to kill manatees?" Another wrote, "How is that possible if they're protected under the Endangered Species Act? And what could possibly be their reason for killing these beautiful, kind, harmless mammals?"

Fact Check: False, the species is protected

The claim is false. The Trump administration has not legalized the hunting or killing of Florida manatees. The species remains protected under the federal Marine Mammal Protection Act and Florida state law, both of which continue to prohibit hunting, killing, or harassing manatees.

The July 2026 changes to the Endangered Species Act (ESA) do not override these protections. Instead, the July 2026 ESA rule changes ended the automatic "blanket" protections that previously applied to newly listed threatened species and narrowed the regulatory definition of "harm" by excluding most habitat modification from the prohibited "take" of wildlife.

While these changes could affect habitat protections and future threatened species listings, including the pending proposal involving Florida manatees, they do not make it legal to hunt or kill the animals.

Supporters of the changes argue they better balance conservation with economic and landowner interests, while critics contend that weaker habitat protections could indirectly increase risks to manatee populations.
