Gaby Hoffman says Kevin Costner had no 'paternal energy' on set of sports film classic 'Field of Dreams'
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Kevin Costner did not have much “paternal energy” on the sets of ‘Field of Dreams’, Gabby Hoffman, 42, who starred alongside the ‘Yellowstone’ actor in the 1989 film, has revealed.
Hoffman, now 42, starred in the classic sports film when she was just six. During a recent interview, the ‘Transparent’ actress shared that while the set was filled with several father-like figures, Costner, 69, wasn’t one of them.
Gabby Hoffman reveals Kevin Costner did not have 'paternal energy'
In an interview with Business Insider, Hoffman reflected on the time she shared screen space with Costner as his on-screen daughter, per New York Post.
She shared, that while there was a lot of “paternal energy” on the ‘Field of Dreams’ set, she said, “I didn’t feel paternal energy from Kevin Costner. We’ll leave it at that.”
However, she noted that she shared a warm relationship with the film’s other actor, the late star Ray Liotta.
In the 1989 flick based on the 1982 novel ‘Shoeless Joe’ by WP Kinsella, Liotta played the role of Shoeless Joe Jackson. Costner, on the other hand, starred as farmer Ray Kinsella who builds a baseball field that attracts ghosts of baseball legends to play the game.
While Hoffmann had not much to praise about Costner, she had some pleasant memories with Liotta.
Talking about the star who died at 67 in 2022 of pulmonary edema and acute heart failure, Hoffman said, “I just absolutely loved Ray.”
She explained, “I was convinced he was in love with me, too, which, of course, he wasn’t, but he was just such a sweetheart,” before adding, “I didn’t have a dad growing up, and there were just so many wonderful men on that set.”
The ‘Now and Then’ actress recalled, “Ray Liotta and, actually, all the baseball players, I would sit around and play cards with them and play catch with them.”
“I sort of jokingly said I had a big crush on him, but I think I was really drawn to a kind of fatherly, protective energy that he had in spades. What a beautiful actor he was, too,” gushed the ‘Volcano’ actress.
Kevin Costner is a father of seven children
While Hoffman shared she didn’t feel any “paternal energy” from Costner, the ‘Horizon’ star is, in real life, a father of seven.
He shares three children with his first wife Cindy Silva - Annie, 40, Lily, 37, and Joe, 36. He is also a father to his fourth child Liam, 26 with Bridget Rooney.
With his recent ex Christine Baumgartner, he shares three of his youngest children - Cayden, 17, Hayes, 15, and Grace, 13.
Though Costner’s ‘Horizon: The American Saga’ was panned by critics, the film received a seven-minute-long standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this month.
Costner shared the special moment at Cannes with his children as five out of his seven offsprings were present there to cheer for their father, per NBC News.
A teary-eyed Costner quipped on-stage, “I’m sorry you had to clap that long for me to understand that I should speak.”
The ‘The Bodyguard’ actor continued, “Such good people. Such a good moment, not just for me, but for the actors that came with me, for people who believed in me who continued to work. It’s a funny business, and I’m so glad I found it. There’s no place like here. I’ll never forget this — either will my children.”
