WASHINGTON, DC: California Governor Gavin Newsom and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La) engaged in a heated exchange on social media regarding the response of House Republicans to the ongoing influx of migrants at the border.

The disagreement between the opposing party leaders began on Wednesday, March 13, when Newsom quoted an article about machines that could detect fentanyl, which was not being used despite being available, Colorado Springs Gazette reports.

He criticized Johnson's record on border security and accused House Republicans of taking no action to prevent drug smuggling at the border, despite labeling it as a “crisis.”

How did the online back-and-forth between Gavin Newsom and Mike Johnson pan out?

Governor Newsom took to X (formerly Twitter) and wrote, “As @GOP screams 'BORDER CRISIS!'…Here’s what they are doing to help: NOTHING. Actually, worse than nothing.”

He continued, “Machines that could stop the flow of fentanyl across our border are now literally sitting in warehouses. Unused. Not installed. All thanks to the fine leadership of @SpeakerJohnson, going above and beyond the call of Donald Trump.”

Democrats have accused Republicans of intentionally refusing to pass the bipartisan legislation to address the issues at the border. They believe the Republicans are doing this to increase former President Donald Trump's popularity against President Joe Biden before the November general election.

Speaker Mike Johnson responded to Newsom’s fiery claims within hours by highlighting a piece of legislation that Democrats had opposed that was aimed at securing the border.

“Actually we’ve passed: HR 2, The Laken Riley Act, Bills to deter illegals from committing social security fraud, fleeing border patrol, or drunk driving. Much better than the Newsom approach of free health care, lodging & 'sanctuary to all who seek it,'” he wrote.

Newsom then lambasted the House Speaker as a "fraud" for opposing the Democrats' proposal to allocate $20 billion in border security funds.

“Oops. You left out that whole part about how you blocked $20 billion in funding for things like: – 1,500 new border agents. – 4,300 asylum officers. – New cutting edge tech to detect and stop the flow of fentanyl. You’re a fraud,” Newsom concluded.

Again, in response, Speaker Mike Johnson questioned requests for additional financing, blaming the Biden administration for creating the border situation that makes such funding necessary.

Johnson asked, "Why is the Administration asking for more money? Because their policies opened the border. And those failures are amplified by reckless mayors and Governors like yourself."

“Doubling down on these failed policies is why people are leaving California faster than any other state," he said in conclusion.

For months, both political parties have blamed one other for the worsening crisis at the border.

Republicans claim that Democrats want an open border policy, while Democrats allege that Republicans are deliberately obstructing border security legislation to undermine President Joe Biden politically.

Internet slams Gavin Newsom for calling out House Republicans for doing ‘nothing’

People on X skewered the Golden State Democrat governor for going after House Speaker Mike Johnson and putting the House GOP on trial for their purposeful blocking of border security legislation.

One X user remarked, "Oops. You left out that whole part where you fought any sort of border protection for four years. You’re a fraud."

Another user said, "LOL. You’re a clown, Gavin. Those officers are to process the illegals. Stop trying to commiefornia my America."

Another user asked, "Why is that you always want more funding and not policy change?"

One user claimed, "Oops you are forgetting all the executive orders that @POTUS abolished on his first day assuming office? Every single one of those orders he abolished could be reinstated immediately."

Another X user quipped, "Speaking of fraud, are you talking about that "border security bill" that was really just a war funding bill?"

Finally, this user tweeted, "NewScum is the best nickname."
