ATLANTA, GEORGIA: Former Georgia Lt Gov Geoff Duncan, a Republican, endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the presidency to defeat former President Donald Trump.

"I'm committed to beating Donald Trump. The only vehicle left for me to do that with is the Democratic Party. If that requires me to vote for, speak for, or endorse @KamalaHarris then count me in!" Duncan wrote on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, July 24.

The Republican who earlier announced he would vote for President Joe Biden in November shifted his support to Harris following the incumbent's announcement of his withdrawal from the re-election bid endorsing his running mate for the Democratic ticket earlier this week.

The lifelong Republican confirmed his backing to the new Democratic presumptive nominee in an interview on 'Politically Georgia' podcast by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution where he called for Harris to win the swing voters of Georgia and other states to defeat Trump in November, as per The Hill.

He emphasized that if endorsing and voting for Harris was the best way to prevent Trump from a second term in the White House, he was ready to speak at a convention.

"If Donald Trump wins the hearts and minds of the majority of the 10 percent in the middle and Kamala Harris doesn't, then he's going to be the next president," he said in the podcast aired on July 24. "And then we've got real issues on our hands as Republicans."

Since Biden passed the torch on July 21, Harris secured prominent endorsements, including Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, and Rep Nancy Pelosi. Moreover, in the first 24 hours of her presidential campaign, she raised $81 million.

Duncan was among the handful of Republicans who publicly opposed Trump's White House race under the GOP ticket. The former lieutenant governor was in office when the real estate mogul accused Georgia of election fraud after the 2020 presidential election. Despite voting for the former president in the White House race, he rejected Trump's claim.

Besides Duncan, former GOP Rep Adam Kinzinger, who backed Biden for president, also indicated his support for Harris.

Geoff Duncan's endorsement of Kamala Harris divides Internet

Netizens split into two camps over Duncan's endorsement for Harris to defeat Trump in November. While one group welcomed the support, praising him for choosing the nation over the party, another side slammed the Republican, labeling him a "traitor."

"THIS is what true strength is. Putting country over party. Thank you," a user wrote. While another remarked, "You just another politician turned multi millionaire that has lost touch with the people you used to represent!"

"Thank you for showing everyone publicly that all it takes is a little courage and conviction to do the right thing," added a third user. Whereas a fourth response read, "Change your party, traitor. Look at all the liberals fawning at your feet. Puke."

"Gutsy move. All your peers know that this is the right thing to do, too, but they’ve sold so much of their souls that they don’t have enough left to search. I applaud your integrity. I look forward to respectfully disagreeing about politics again, once the danger has passed," another person said.

On the other hand, someone else wrote, "And now we can see how corrupt Georgia is. He is supposed to speak for the people, his opinion does not matter. He’s corrupt and a RINO."

"This is a principled stance. Too many cowards out there not willing to do this/ say this," a remark read. While an individual said, "Ok so you’re not voting for policies, you’re just voting against a candidate. That’s the most Un-American thing I’ve seen."
