Internet skeptical as Kamala Harris raises $81M in 24 hours after Biden endorses her as Democratic nominee
WASHINGTON, DC: Vice President Kamala Harris has raised $81 million for her presidential campaign within the first 24 hours of being endorsed by President Joe Biden as his replacement for the Democratic Party nominee, reported Fox News on Monday, July 22.
Biden announced suspending his reelection campaign in a public letter that he posted on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
In a following tweet, he named Harris as his choice candidate to lead the Democratic ticket, writing, "My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year."
My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term. Kamala Harris campaign touts 'largest 24-hour raise in presidential history'
In an email release on Monday afternoon, Harris' campaign touted the collection as the "largest 24-hour raise in presidential history," with over 888,000 grassroots donors contributing within the 24-hour period. It was the first contribution in the 2024 cycle for 60% of the donors, they noted, adding that 43,000 of them had signed up to make recurring donations.
Campaign spokesperson Kevin Munoz said in a statement, "The historic outpouring of support for Vice President Harris represents exactly the kind of grassroots energy and enthusiasm that wins elections. Already, we are seeing a broad and diverse coalition come together to support our critical work of talking to the voters that will decide this election."
Taking on GOP nominee Donald Trump, Munoz added that "there is a groundswell behind Kamala Harris, and Donald Trump is terrified because he knows his divisive, unpopular agenda can’t stand up to the Vice President’s record and vision for the American people."
While the funds raised by the Harris campaign have broken records and far surpassed Trump and RNC's $53 million 1-day haul after the former president was convicted in the New York hush-money case, they did not offer a breakdown of what percentage of the $81 million was raised online by small-dollar donations and what share came from heavyweight donors.
The total collection reportedly includes money raised by the campaign, the Democratic National Committee, and joint fundraising committees.
Internet doubts records donations to Kamala Harris campaign
Netizens found it hard to believe the massive 1-day collection being reported by the Harris campaign. They tried to explain the number by claiming funds were transferred over from Biden's campaign, and that top-dollar donors pitched in to help, as the the following tweets demonstrate.
"That was money that was being withheld. The dems didn’t raise any money last month," wrote a person.

"All came from Hollywood, Wallstreet, and Soros," stated another.
"Transferring campaign funds from one person to another is called: 'New campaign donations'," mocked a third.
