LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: When the 2024 Oscar nominations were revealed on Tuesday morning, January 23, many expected the Best Original Song category to feature soaring ballads and emotional anthems from some of the year's most dramatic films.

But in a surprise twist that delighted many people, Ryan Gosling's novelty song 'I'm Just Ken' from the summer blockbuster 'Barbie' was among the nominees. As social media erupted in glee at the goofy track's unexpected recognition, excitement also swirled around 'Barbie' scoring multiple other nominations, per Metro.

Ryan Gosling will likely perform 'I’m Just Ken' at the Oscars if tradition holds

Social media erupted with joy when the 2024 Oscar nominations were announced, with Gosling’s silly 'I’m Just Ken' ballad from 'Barbie' receiving a surprise Best Original Song nomination.

The tongue-in-cheek tune, featured in last summer’s box office smash 'Barbie' starring Margot Robbie, tickled audiences and critics alike for its absurd lyrics and Gosling’s deadpan vocal delivery.

While the Best Original Song category often features emotional ballads and sweeping orchestral numbers, the lightweight 'I’m Just Ken' stands out for being a self-aware novelty song sung by Gosling’s himbo version of the classic Mattel doll.

Still, 'I’m Just Ken' faces fierce rivals for the golden statue, including Billie Eilish’s inspirational anthem 'What Was I Made For?' from 'Barbie' as well as songs from 'American Symphony,' 'Flamin’ Hot', and 'Killers of the Flower Moon.'

If tradition holds, performers usually sing their nominated songs live during the ceremony. That means Gosling may have to don his fur coat and sunglasses one more time to earnestly plead "I'm just Ken, anywhere else I'd be a ten" to the glittering crowd.

Beyond the surprise song nomination, 'Barbie' racked up several Oscar nods thanks to its stellar cast and creative vision. The candy-colored film itself earned a Best Picture nomination against heavyweight dramas like 'Oppenheimer' and 'Killers of the Flower Moon.' Gosling also received a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his role as the self-doubting Ken doll.
