NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Jon Stewart didn't hold back in his critique of Donald Trump's latest campaign catchphrase during the latest episode of 'The Daily Show' on March 5.

Returning to the Comedy Central program after nine years away, Stewart opened the segment with a montage of media coverage on America’s "border crisis," acknowledging the unsustainable increase in numbers.

Jon Stewart ridicules Trump's 'bigrant crime' saying 'it’s a portmanteau'

While Stewart recognized the bipartisan acknowledgment of the US border issues, citing the staggering figure of 300,000 migrants crossing the US-Mexico border in December 2023 alone, he aimed at the Republican party for their reliance on fear-mongering as an election-year strategy.

Specifically, Stewart criticized the latest catchphrase to enter the debate – "Bigrant crime."

This phrase emerged from a recent speech by former US President Trump in Michigan, where he announced he would be shortening "Biden migrant crime" to "Bigrant crime," drawing enthusiastic applause and laughter from his audience.

Mocking Trump's attempt at wordplay, Stewart remarked, “It’s a portmanteau... I’m not completely sold on ‘bigrant.’ It really just sounds like a migrant who’s open to crossing either border."

Stewart continued his critique, pointing out, “There are some documented migrants who are committing crimes – some of them horrific – but isn’t that true for every demographic, including natives?”

In another segment of 'The Daily Show,' footage from right-wing US TV network Fox News showed a guest referring to “criminals, rapists, murderers, child predators, and God knows who else” crossing the border.

After airing the clip, Stewart quipped, “God knows who else? I mean statistically, a couple of them at least have to be podcasters”.

Viewers applaud Jon Stewart's ability to expose hypocrisy

Stewart's statements resonated with his audience as several people took to the show's comment section to pour in praises for the host.

One person commented, "The way this man effortlessly exposes the hypocrisies of not just the right, but his own side leanings as well; that's exactly what we need more of. Thank you, Jon."

Having left 'The Daily Show' in 2015, Stewart returned to his hosting duties on 12 February, replacing comedian Trevor Noah.

He is set to host the program every Monday until the US presidential election later this year. Additionally, Stewart will executive produce the weeknight show for Comedy Central into next year, aiding it through another transition period.
