NYC Mayor Eric Adams mocked for claiming he has 'no idea' grand jury called for campaign corruption probe
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: New York City Mayor Eric Adams found himself in the eye of a political storm this weekend as reports surfaced of a federal grand jury investigating corruption in his campaign fundraising efforts.
Despite the gravity of the allegations, the mayor struck a nonchalant and relaxed tone, claiming complete ignorance of the impending legal firestorm during an appearance at a Harlem festival on Saturday, June 8, as per the New York Post.
Eric Adams claims ignorance about the grand jury investigation into his campaign fundraising efforts
During the 39th Annual 116th Street Festival in East Harlem, New York City Mayor Adams faced a barrage of questions from reporters about the federal corruption probe targeting his campaign.
"I don’t know, I’m not a lawyer. I’m Eric Adams — the mayor! Ex-cop!" retorted Adams, visibly dismissive of the seriousness of the situation.
The mayor showed up two hours late to the festival on Saturday, a day after The Post revealed that a grand jury was examining evidence in the FBI's investigation, potentially leading to subpoenas. When pressed for details, he repeatedly claimed ignorance, saying, "No idea. No idea. No idea," as his aides deflected further inquiries.
Despite being an avid reader of The Post, Adams stated he was uninformed about the developments.
"They don’t tell me stuff. Let it follow the process… Speak to the counsel. The counsel will explain to you the normal process," suggested the lawmaker, attempting to downplay the situation. Maintaining a cheerful demeanor, he briefly addressed the crowd without further comment on the probe.
Curtis Sliwa, Adams' former mayoral rival and Guardian Angels founder, seized the opportunity to criticize the embattled mayor.
"The walls are closing in. Swagger man has no plan to get out of this. He’s not going to the White House. He originally thought he was. He may be going to the big house in chains and shackles," proclaimed Sliwa at the festival.
He hinted that members of Adams' administration might turn into informants to save themselves, claiming, "You have people in the administration who may have decided it’s time to become a confidential informer. Cause they don’t want to go down on the ship. That’s how the feds get you. They get the little fish but they want the whale. And everyone knows they want Eric Adams."
Sliwa's comments were fueled by rumors that a former City Hall aide, suspended amid the federal probe, had become an FBI informant. The aide in question, ex-director of protocol Rana Abbasova, had her New Jersey home raided by the FBI.
The scrutiny extended beyond Adams' inner circle as authorities conducted searches at the residences of Brianna Suggs, the mayor's chief fundraiser during his campaign, and Cenk Ocal, a former Turkish Airlines executive who was involved with the transition team after his election victory.
"All these people are not gonna protect him. They’re gonna give him up," remarked Sliwa forecasting a bleak future for Adams.
Eric Adams' ignorance about the grand jury investigation sparks mockery
One netizen remarked, "Adams has always managed to embarrass himself in public," while another added, "He has 'NO IDEA' about a lot of things in NYC!"
A person vented, "Says the incompetent one whose city is circling the drain," and someone else remarked, "Adams can easily win the title of the most moronic mayor in America right now."
"At this point in time, everyone believes he's been replaced by one of those lizard people. No way someone is this incompetent," quipped an individual. One more observed, "It doesn’t matter what questions you ask Adams, it’s always the same answer, 'I Don’t Know.'"
"This man sounds so uneducated the moment he opens his mouth," said another person, and a person echoed, "Adams sounds like Trump more every day: Delusional."
