LAS VEGAS, NEVADA: OJ Simpson was once deemed the legendary football player but his final years had been very lonely and unusual.

The former athlete’s life went downhill after the 1994 murder of his ex-wife Nicole Brown and her pal, Ron Goldman, The Sun reported.

OJ Simpson faced charges twice in his lifetime

Simpson was charged with the killings and he went on to face one of the most highly dramatized trials in US history.

Though eventually he was acquitted, his bad days did not go away. A few years later, he was convicted in a civil case after being charged with armed robbery in 2008.

Simpson was awarded over three decades in prison, where he reportedly spent most of his time in the gym and providing training to prisoners' sports teams. The broadcaster was even appointed as the jail's softball league commissioner.

OJ Simpson was released from jail early

However, in 2017, Simpson got early release from jail because of his good behavior, as reported by the publication.

At the time, his friend Tom Scotto said, “He wants to see his family and hug his family on the outside of prison.”

“He wants to eat seafood; he wants to eat steak. He wants to enjoy the simple pleasures that he hasn’t enjoyed in nine years. He’s going to get the latest iPhone,” Scotto added.

OJ Simpson made Las Vegas his home

Also, following his release, the actor reportedly chose to stay in Las Vegas instead of his Florida home.

It has been said that though he lived in a $17.5 million (£1.4 million) luxury five-bedroom property, he had a lonely life and regularly played golf alone.

However, despite being snubbed by his friends, Simpson did not leave enjoying life and reportedly spent his time at hotels and even attended a Vegas Golden Knights hockey game.

He also once reportedly shared, “We don’t need to go back and relive the worst days of our lives. The subject of the moment is the subject I will never revisit again. My family and I have moved on to what we call the ‘no negative zone’. We focus on the positives.”

The Sun reported that Simpson used to get a $10032.80 (£8,000) monthly pension from the NFL. Not only that, his other income came from cash-signing sports memorabilia at around $438.91 (£350) a pop.

OJ Simpson disclosed about his cancer in May 2023

However, in 2023, Simpson revealed that he was diagnosed with cancer and “had to do the whole chemo thing.”

Though he claimed that “it looks like I beat it” at the time, he lost his life to it on April 10.

Simpson’s family posted on X, “On April 10th, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren.”

“During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace. -The Simpson Family,” the statement added.
