MANHATTAN, NEW YORK: Liz Cheney, a former member of House leadership, sharply criticized Speaker Mike Johnson for attending Donald Trump's hush money criminal trial in Manhattan, New York on Tuesday, May 14.

“Have to admit I’m surprised that @SpeakerJohnson wants to be in the ‘I cheated on my wife with a porn star’ club,” read Cheney's post on X (formerly Twitter).

“I guess he’s not that concerned with teaching morality to our young people after all," she added.

Speaker Johnson, who asserted that "my faith informs everything I do," showed up at the Manhattan courthouse with other Republican lawmakers as Trump was heading for his trial, according to USA Today.

Despite Trump's legal issues and revelations of his alleged affair with Daniels, Johnson's appearance at the courthouse underscores the steadfast support from House Republicans for the former president ahead of the November election.

Mike Johnson calls hush money case a 'sham to prosecution of President Trump'

Confirming his appearance, the Speaker's office slammed the "left-wing Manhattan district attorney" Alvin Bragg who led the probe into Trump and called the hush money case a "sham prosecution of President Trump."

The Speaker stated that he wanted to show his support for Trump because he believed all the cases against the 77-year-old politician were unfair, particularly during his election campaign.

While outside the Manhattan courthouse, Johnson told reporters, “These are politically motivated trials and they are a disgrace."

He then criticized judicial officials and also trial witnesses including disgraced former lawyer Michael Cohen.

Johnson expressed that he is "disgusted" at what he perceives as efforts to keep Trump "off the campaign trail."
