Hollywood producer Carol Baum called out for saying Sydney Sweeney is ‘not pretty’ and ‘can’t act’
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Renowned Hollywood producer Carol Baum has sparked a controversy with her scathing remarks about rising star Sydney Sweeney, claiming that the actress is neither attractive nor talented.
Baum's comments, made during a conversation with New York Times film critic Janet Maslin, have drawn sharp backlash from social media users and industry insiders alike.
Carol Baum criticizes Sydney Sweeney's looks and talent
Speaking candidly before an audience following a screening of her 1988 film 'Dead Ringers', Baum did not mince words when discussing Sweeney's recent rise to fame.
"There's an actress who everybody loves now - Sydney Sweeney."
"I don't get Sydney Sweeney. I was watching on the plane Sydney Sweeney's movie because I wanted to watch it," she said about 'Anyone But You'.
"I wanted to know who she is and why everybody's talking about her," she said.
"I watched this unwatchable movie- sorry to people who love this movie - (this) romantic comedy where they hate each other."
Baum, in reference to the producing class she teaches at the USC School of Cinematic Arts, added, "I said to my class, 'Explain this girl to me. She's not pretty, she can't act. Why is she so hot?'"
"Nobody had an answer but then the question was asked, "Well if you could get your movie made because she was in it, would you do it?"
"I said, 'Well that's a really good question...that's a very hard question to answer because we all want to get the movie made and who walks away from a green light? Nobody I know. Your job is to get the movie made'."
Sweeney, known for her roles in HBO's 'Euphoria' and several recent film projects, has become a polarizing figure in Hollywood.
Internet reacts to Carol Baum's Sydney Sweeney criticism
Hollywood producer Carol Baum's recent criticism of rising star Sydney Sweeney has ignited a heated debate online, with many expressing outrage over Baum's blunt remarks about Sweeney's appearance and talent.
The controversy has drawn attention to broader issues of sexism, ageism, and professionalism within the entertainment industry.
One user wrote, "She does have those weird ceiling eyes that can make her look dead eyed, but she can act. She was fantastic in 'White Lotus' and 'Reality'. I’ve heard she’s good in Euphoria too, but I’ve never watched it. I don’t think it’s fair to criticize anyone’s acting in a romantic comedy. Obviously her body contributes to her popularity also. It’s nice to see someone naturally busty for once instead of implants."
Another user wrote, "Women relish tearing down successful women. For this mature woman to negative remark on another younger woman’s physical appearance and talent (both of which are subjective) is in such poor taste. I don’t get it."
Another user commented, "As a producer it is very unprofessional to make public comments about the appearance and skills of any actor. It makes me not want to watch what Carol has produced."
The other user wrote, "Baum was missing out a lot of information in her blast at Sydney who was terrific in 'Euphoria'. No wonder her class could not answer Baum, they would have been astonished at the attack."
"The comments from this woman are unkind, there was no need for that. It is not easy to rise to the top in any profession, and usually people do because they have ‘something’ and this young lady has just that. Plus I personally think she is pretty," said another user.
