WASHINGTON, DC: The House is scheduled to vote on Wednesday, June 12, to decide whether Attorney General Merrick Garland should be held in contempt of Congress for defying subpoenas related to President Joe Biden's handling of classified documents.

The Republican-led House Judiciary and Oversight Committees have demanded Garland hand over audio recordings of the president's interview with special counsel Robert Hur, which is part of their impeachment inquiry.

Mike Johnson says they are 'anxious to have vote'

House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed confidence that the vote would pass even though some GOP lawmakers have not disclosed their stance on the contentious issue.

“I do think the contempt of Merrick Garland will pass on the floor, and we’re anxious to have that vote,” Johnson said at a press conference.

This confidence comes despite uncertainty over whether Republicans have enough support for the resolution.

Two sources familiar with internal conversations told The Hill that at least five Republicans have opposed voting to hold Garland in contempt of Congress.

Representatives Dave Joyce (R-Ohio) and Garret Graves (R-La) would not say how they plan to vote on the contempt resolution on Wednesday morning, June 12, The Hill reported.

Republicans can only afford to lose two of their members on any party-line measures if all lawmakers are in attendance.

Legal and political implications of the contempt charge against Attorney General Merrick Garland

Despite these internal divisions, House GOP leaders are moving forward with the vote scheduled for around 3. 30 pm Eastern time on Wednesday, June 12.

The House Oversight and Judiciary Committees, which advanced Garland contempt resolutions last month, have a transcript of Biden’s conversations with Hur.

The president has claimed executive privilege over the audio, which provides legal cover to Garland, as the assertion generally forecloses any prosecution over the covered materials.

The Justice Department has argued that releasing the audio to the committee could decrease cooperation in future investigations if individuals do not want their conversations given to Congress.

Internet reacts to Mike Johnson's assertions that Attorney General Merrick Garland will be held in contempt of Congress

Online reactions to the impending vote have been mixed. “Useless, useless legislator. Enough of this do-nothing Congress. The President has invoked executive privilege. And you want the AG to defy the President? Go to court; stop this useless waste of time. Your contempt charge has NO weight. You have to go to court. And for what?” lashed one user on X.

Another commented, “No, it won’t. Don’t you realize they protect their own? There’s no more right or left, just crooked politicians.”

“What are you waiting for? Let’s get on it. Prove you guys have a backbone to finally do something,” wrote another.

“IF IT DOES NOT PASS...RESIGN!!” suggested one. “No one is above the law,” echoed another.

“I said earlier I didn’t think the RINOS would hold anyone accountable, and here we are,” predicted one user, while another suggested, “Do a criminal contempt instead.”
