ATLANTA, GEORGIA: Sen Raphael Warnock condemned the Republican outrage directed at President Joe Biden for acknowledging Transgender Day of Visibility on Easter Sunday, particularly singling out Speaker Mike Johnson's criticism as the "opposite of the Christian faith", reported The Hill.

Transgender Day of Visibility, observed on March 31, coincidentally fell on Easter this year, and as usual, Biden marked the day like every year. The move infuriated conservatives, and Johnson labeled the move as an "outrageous and abhorrent" attack on Christianity.

Warnock, a Baptist pastor besides his role in Congress, lashed out at the Speaker's criticism during an interview on CNN's 'State of the Union' on Sunday, March 31.

"Apparently, the Speaker finds trans people abhorrent, and I think he ought to think about that," the Senator from Georgia fumed.

Warnock, who gave an Easter sermon at Martin Luther King's church, the Ebenezer Baptist Church, in Atlanta, added, "This is just one more instance of folks who do not know how to lead us trying to divide us. This is the opposite of the Christian faith. Jesus centered on the marginalized. He centered the poor."

Raphael Warnock urges for 'voices of faith'

Speaking to Dana Bash on CNN, Warnock highlighted the need for "voices of faith" to stop those who divide the people.

"And in a moment like this, we need voices, particularly voices of faith, who would use our faith not as a weapon to beat other people down but as a bridge to bring all of us together," he said.

President Biden called Republican demands for sharp spending cuts unacceptable and said he'll talk with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy about debt-ceiling and budget negotiations on his flight back from Japan. The G7 summit will be held in Hiroshima from May 19-22.

The White House also dismissed the GOP outrage against Biden, noting the President, who is a devout Catholic, "will never abuse his faith for political purposes or for profit".

Former President Donald Trump wasted no time to slam his predecessor's acknowledgment of the day as "appalling and insulting".

The Democratic Senator also lashed out at the GOP presumptive nominee's merchandise of Bibles, according to the New York Post.

"The Bible does not need Donald Trump's endorsement and Jesus, in the very last week of his life, chased the money changers out of the temple," Warnock argued. He added that Trump's new business was unsurprising and expected.

Judge Juan Merchan scheduled Trump's criminal trial to begin on April 15, which would make it the first criminal prosecution of a former American president. Trump was charged with 34 counts of falsifying business records last year, which prosecutors say was an effort to hide a potential sex scandal, both before and after the 2016 election. Last week, Trump launched the 'God Bless the USA Bible' for $59.99 per piece, touting it as his 'Make America Pray Again' initiative.

Weighing in on the former President's Bible merchandise, Warnock suggested it might back backfire if his supporters read the parts that say "thou shalt not lie," or "shall not bear false witness," or the part about wolves dressed as sheep.
