MANHATTAN, NEW YORK: Former President Donald Trump showered praises on Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito after he refused to step away from cases related to the 2020 presidential elections and January 6, 2021, US Capitol riots.

The cases involve Trump's impunity and the January 6 defendants. The announcement comes amid flag controversy which suggests he has allegedly been part of 'Stop the Seal' protests to undermine Joe Biden's victory in 2021.

Conditions do not meet the recusal, alleges Justice Samuel Alito's defense

There were growing calls from Democrats for Alito to rescue himself from the cases as the controversy deepened, raising questions on his credibility to preside over Trump's cases. However, Alito has decided to stay put.

"I am confident that a reasonable person who is not motivated by political or ideological considerations or a desire to affect the outcome of Supreme Court cases would conclude...two incidents you cite do not meet the conditions for recusal,” Alito wrote in a letter to members of the Congress, distributed by the Supreme Court, CNN reported.

“As I have stated publicly, I had nothing whatsoever to do with the flying of that flag. I was not even aware of the upside-down flag until it was called to my attention," he wrote further.

Alito said his wife, Martha-Ann, was responsible for flying an upside-down flag over his home in 2021 and an 'Appeal to Heaven' flag at his New Jersey beach house last year.

Flying an upside-down flag was a protest to undermine presidential elections and was carried by rioters who violently stormed the US Capitol in January 2021 when Trump claimed election fraud.

Donald Trump congratulates Justice Samuel Alito for having the guts to refuse recusal

Trump, who was in the court for his hush money trial awaiting the jury's verdict, wrote on Truth Social praising Alito.

"Congratulations to United States Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito for showing the intelligence, courage and "guts" to refuse stepping aside from making a decision on anything January 6th related," Trump wrote on Truth Social.

"All US Judges, Justices, and Leaders should have such GRIT - Our Country would be far more advanced than its current status as a badly failing nation, headed by the Worst President in American History, Crooked Joe Biden!" he concluded.

The Supreme Court justice can be impeached for refusal by the House of Representatives and removal from office by the Senate. But, it has not happened in American history, as per The Denver Post.

The court is considering two significant cases connected to the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol by Trump supporters.

These include the charges against the rioters and the question of whether Trump is immune from prosecution for election interference charges.

Internet mocks Donald Trump for praising Samuel Alito for refusing recusal

Internet mocked Trump for praising Justice Alito saying it was a 'weird thing to say.' Some even alleged that Trump's praise for Alito was a gratitude for saving him.

"Alito is corrupt and compromised," wrote one. "Congratulations? What a weird thing to say," wrote second user.

"Wow-that’s just MORE embarrassing for him. Getting a big congrats from the mob boss of the insurrection isn’t the flex you think it is for a SCOTUS judge that was outed for being an insurrectionist," wrote a third user.

"Sort of like the grit that Merchan is showing," mocked one. "In refusing to step aside, Alito has brought the SCOTUS into disrepute," wrote one more.

"Guess he received your check in the mail. Or as you call it, a legal expense," joked another referencing to his hush money payments. "In other words, thanks for staying to protect me, even though I am a traitor," wrote one.
