Internet in splits as Jimmy Kimmel mocks George Santos for suing him for fraud over airing joke Cameo videos
MANHATTAN, NEW YORK: In a lawsuit filed on Saturday, February 17, ousted congressman George Santos accused Jimmy Kimmel of manipulating him into creating videos on the Cameo app and subsequently using them to mock him on his late-night show.
The suit, filed in the US district court for the southern district of New York, lists Kimmel, ABC, and Walt Disney Co as the defendants.
Santos, who was expelled from the House of Representatives in December 2023 following charges of fraud and misappropriation of funds from donors, is pursuing legal action citing alleged copyright infringement, fraudulent inducement, breach of contract, and unjust enrichment, as per The Guardian.
Jimmy Kimmel talks about the bizarre lawsuit from former Republican candidate George Santos
In his recent February 20 monologue on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!', Kimmel humorously recounted the events surrounding a lawsuit filed against him by none other than Santos, a figure known for his controversial past in politics.
The host quipped, "It was an eventful weekend for, did anyone else get sued by George Santos this weekend? George Santos, a man Republicans kicked out of Congress for being a fraud, is suing me for fraud."
Kimmel explained how he and his team had ordered some messages from Santos on the Cameo app, where celebrities offer personalized video messages for a fee, writing absurd and comical scripts for him to recite. Little did they know, this act would land them in legal hot water.
"We gave them a credit card number and, sure enough, he recorded the messages and sent them back to us, and now he's suing," recounted the comedian with a mixture of disbelief and amusement.
Santos alleges that he was deceived into recording these messages under the false pretense of genuine fan support, only to have them broadcast on national television. Kimmel couldn't resist poking fun at the absurdity of the situation.
"The idea that he believed these messages, which get posted on the Cameo site anyway, were from real fans... One of them was about a guy named Gary who ate six pounds of loose ground beef in under 30 minutes," quipped Kimmel.
The late-night host further jested, "He's being represented by the prestigious law firm of Pot Kettle in Black," referring to the proverb, "The pot calling the kettle black."
Despite facing a lawsuit, Kimmel approached it with his trademark humor, announcing, "They're seeking $750,000 in damages plus other damages to be determined in court. That is why I'm setting up a GoFundMe right now with a target of $355 million, so we can save this country."
He was possibly taking a dig at Donald Trump's supporters launching a fundraiser to help him pay the fines in his New York civil fraud case ruling.
Fans in splits as Jimmy Kimmel jests about his George Santos lawsuit
Kimmel's humorous monologue cracked people up, who commented with their thoughts regarding Santos filing a lawsuit against the late-night host.
One said, "I literally laughed so hard that George Santos, OUT OF ALL PEOPLE, is suing Jimmy Kimmel for fraud. I just can't.... lmao. Bro needs to check himself," and another wrote, "Santos suing Jimmy for fraud is like Trump suing someone for inciting an insurrection."
A person remarked, "Santos suing any1 for fraud is hilarious," while someone else chimed in, "George Santos suing Jimmy Kimmel for fraud is like The Shredder suing the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for terrorizing New York."
"I can still hardly believe George Santos is a real person, let alone one who was actually elected to Congress!" joked one more.
