Raking in an impressive $18 million from 3,152 theaters across North America, the film shattered expectations, marking the largest Christmas Day opening since 2009. This extraordinary success secures its place as the second-biggest Christmas Day opening in cinematic history, as per Variety.



 

'The Color Purple' brings back Broadway musical format on big screen

Surpassing all projections, 'The Color Purple' surged ahead on Monday, December 25, outshining other newcomers like Neon’s racing drama 'Ferrari' and George Clooney’s inspirational sports narrative 'The Boys in the Boat'.

Remarkably, Warner Bros dominated the domestic charts, securing the top three spots with 'Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom' and 'Wonka' following closely behind.

Backed by glowing reviews and an 'A' CinemaScore from audiences, 'The Color Purple' has successfully brought the Broadway musical format back to the big screen after a string of recent disappointments like 'Cats', 'Dear Evan Hansen', and 'In The Heights'.

While the $100 million-budgeted film benefitted from its Christmas Day release, its opening weekend pace suggests strong word of mouth that should propel it through the holidays.

The musical brings Alice Walker's classic novel to life through the eyes of Celie, an African-American woman living in the segregated South in the early 20th century. 'American Idol' winner Fantasia Barrino leads an all-star cast, including Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo, and Halle Bailey.

First-time feature director Blitz Bazawule helms the Warner Bros production, with Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, and Quincy Jones returning as producers over 30 years after the original 1985 film adaptation.

Following the success of 'The Color Purple', social media was abuzz with a myriad of reactions, offering a glimpse into the diverse sentiments swirling around Oprah's triumphant film adaptation.
