'Only took 3 years': Biden admin mocked for considering executive action to deter illegal migrants
WASHINGTON DC: Two unnamed US officials have revealed the Biden administration is planning to take executive action to deter illegal migration at the country's southern border, as reported by NBC News.
Reports about the move came after the Senate blocked a long-sought bipartisan deal to secure the border amid a surge in illegal immigration across the US-Mexico border.
As per the anonymous officials, the unilateral measures, which have been under consideration for months, might upset some progressives in Congress. However, they added that the move would please the Democratic mayors who sought more federal government help to manage the influx of migrants in their cities.
As the likelihood of the border bill becoming law diminishes, President Joe Biden seeks to address the issue despite a temporary decline in undocumented migrants entering the US after the numbers reached a record high at the end of 2023
According to a Fox News report, more than 302,000 migrants attempted to cross the southern border in December 2023 alone.
Officials say the plan would have less effects than the border bill
According to the officials, the proposed plan to take executive action would have lesser effects on securing the border when compared to the potential results of the border security bill if Congress had passed it.
Both officials emphasized that taking no action is not an option, with one adding, "It's a plan B."

The bipartisan national security deal, described by Biden as the "toughest and fairest set of border reforms in decades", failed to survive the Senate floor as GOP lawmakers voted against the legislation on February 7.
Responding to the Senate blocking the legislation, a White House spokesperson criticized the Congressional Republicans for putting partisan politics ahead of national security.
"No regulatory actions would accomplish what the bipartisan national security agreement would have done for border security and the immigration system at large," the spokesperson said.
The worsening migrant crisis at the US-Mexico border has taken the central stage of the 2024 presidential election.
As he closes in on the nomination, former president Donald Trump is effectively using the situation to accuse his successor of causing the catastrophe. Both candidates leading their party primaries will likely face each other for a second time in November.
