Internet upset as Patrick Mahomes Sr admits to having 'few beers' before being arrested for drunk driving
TYLER, TEXAS: Just days before Patrick Mahomes was set to lead the Kansas City Chiefs into battle against the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII on February 11, the star quarterback’s weekend took a nightmarish turn.
Mahomes’ father, former Major League Baseball pitcher Patrick Mahomes Sr, was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving in Smith County, Texas, late evening on Saturday, February 3.
For the younger Mahomes, the incident casts an unwelcome cloud over the most important weekend of his professional career and raises difficult personal questions for the NFL’s brightest young talent, as per the New York Post.
Texas police stopped Patrick Mahomes Sr for driving erratically
According to an affidavit obtained by media outlets, the elder Mahomes was stopped by police in Smith County, Texas, at around 8 pm on Saturday for driving erratically. Officers noticed Mahomes Sr’s vehicle traveling slower than surrounding traffic and found that his registration had expired.
Upon stopping Mahomes Sr, officers observed an open 16-ounce can of Coors beer in the center console of his vehicle. When questioned, the former Major League Baseball pitcher admitted to police that he "had a few beers while watching a game at a local bar" earlier in the day.
Mahomes Sr then agreed to undergo standard field sobriety tests, which he failed, showing clear signs of intoxication, according to the affidavit. With probable cause established, the officers arrested the father of the Super Bowl-bound quarterback for driving while intoxicated.
Patrick Mahomes Sr's third DWI conviction carries up to 10 years in prison
Unfortunately, this was not Mahomes Sr’s first run-in on drunk driving charges. It was his third DWI arrest, after prior offenses in 2008 and 2019. Under Texas law, a third DWI conviction can carry up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
Notably, Mahomes has done endorsement deals with brands like Coors Light even though NFL players are strictly prohibited from promoting or advertising alcohol companies.
In 2023, the Chiefs quarterback managed to cleverly work around those restrictions, appearing in a Coors Light ad that technically promoted a Coors Light-branded bear rather than a beer.
Internet reacts to Patrick Mahomes Sr's recent DWI arrest
The revelation of Mahomes Sr's recent arrest on charges of drunk driving, with an open beer in his car, stirred a flurry of reactions on the internet.
One concerned Facebook user expressed, "Heartbreaking and sad for his loved ones. Can he go into rehab and try to get control of this? Private driver from now on."
Another user questioned the choices of affluent individuals, stating, "Why don’t rich people use a car service if they are going to drink? I just don’t get it."
A third user, noticing an additional concern, remarked, "Expired registration too? Children should never have to bear the responsibility of their parents' bad behavior, but this man needs help. Apparently, this isn’t the first time; he obviously has a drinking problem, so if his family is really concerned, they should intervene."
The severity of Mahomes Sr's repeated offenses prompted another individual to comment, "Once is bad enough. But THREE times?! Throw the book at him!" However, a more skeptical voice in the online discourse added, "Nothing will happen. Even after all the publicity, it’ll be dismissed." Meanwhile, a succinct disapproval surfaced as a user simply stated, "Fool."
