WASHINGTON, DC: In a light-hearted moment that quickly turned into fodder for critics, US President Joe Biden jokingly declared that he works for Vice President Kamala Harris because she's "smarter" than him.

The remark came during a celebration at the White House on Monday, May 13, marking the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

Joe Biden jokes about working for Kamala Harris

"My name’s Joe Biden. I work for Kamala Harris. I asked her to be my VP because I knew I needed somebody smarter than me," Biden quipped, drawing laughter from the audience.

However, Biden's attempt at humor was overshadowed by him visibly struggling with his teleprompter.

"There is no singular Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander identity and diversity and those cultures, the breadth of achievement, and shape the strength and fabric of this country," he added.

As reported by Sky News Australia, the President didn't shy away from criticizing his predecessor, Donald Trump, particularly on his handling of the pandemic and the purported increase in anti-Asian hate crimes.

"We’ll never forget him lying about the pandemic. We’ll never forget about the rise in anti-Asian hate crimes during the pandemic," Biden asserted, referencing legislation he signed in 2021 to combat such hate crimes.

Biden's speech also touched on Trump's stance on immigration, accusing him of divisive rhetoric and opposing comprehensive immigration reform.

“While we fight for comprehensive immigration reform, he calls immigrants rapists and murderers. He says they are not people,” he said. “He says immigrants are ‘poisoning the blood of our country’. Folks, my predecessor wants a country just for some of us. We want a country for all of us.”

“We’re lowering costs, expanding opportunities and protecting freedoms. That’s in stark contrast to my predecessor’s view of America, and his view of all of you,” the president alleged.

Joe Biden trolled on social media

However, Biden's jest about working for Harris because she's "smarter" than him drew mockery on social media.

"He could have picked a rock if that was the criteria," one posted on X.

"Can this man be any more embarrassing?" another wrote.

"Is he off his meds again? Time for another 3 day work week!" someone else quipped.

"Are they about to try and set Kamala as the Dem nominee?" a comment read.

"I think Biden is actually telegraphing what might happen - he just might resign to the nursing home and put the country in Kamala's 'care' [cackle-cackle]," another joked.

Kamala Harris's remarks and presidential profanity

Vice President Harris, who spoke before Biden at the event, delivered remarks urging perseverance and determination in the face of challenges.

“We have to know that sometimes people will open the door for you and leave it open. Sometimes they won’t, and then you need to kick that f***ing door down,” Harris said. “Excuse my language,” she added amid cheers.

While it's not customary for presidents and vice presidents to use profanity publicly, its usage is becoming more common, often in private or leaked conversations. Biden notably referred to rival Donald Trump as "a sick f**k" and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a "bad f***ing guy" and an "a****le," The Guardian reported.
