Janet Jackson's ex-manager explains why he was allegedly fired after controversial remarks about Harris
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Janet Jackson has reportedly fired her representative after an unauthorized apology was issued on her behalf following controversial remarks about Vice President Kamala Harris' racial background.
The remarks, which questioned Harris' Black heritage, caused a social media uproar, leading to swift attempts at damage control.
Janet Jackson's representative Mo Elmasri's firing
Mo Elmasri, who claimed to be Janet Jackson’s manager revealed that he had been dismissed by the “Rhythm Nation” singer, according to his statement to the Daily Beast.
“Janet Jackson fired me due to disagreements between me, her, and Randy [Jackson], after her meeting with the Guardian and her unbalanced statements,” said Elmasri.
Citing an overwhelming number of phone calls, he said that he could not offer more details about the situation.
Elmasri concluded his statement by extending his “support to Kamala Harris.”
Janet Jackson's controversial remarks about Kamala Harris' heritage
The controversy began after Janet Jackson, 58, made comments during an interview with The Guardian regarding Harris' racial identity.
The 59-year-old vice president is the daughter of a Jamaican father and an Indian mother, but the singer's controversial statements appeared to echo a debunked right-wing conspiracy theory.
“She’s not Black. That’s what I heard. That she’s Indian,” Jackson reportedly stated.
Speculating that Harris' heritage had been misrepresented in the media, the singer added, “Her father’s White. That’s what I was told."
These comments quickly drew criticism, with many accusing Jackson of spreading misinformation.
Unauthorized apology from Janet Jackson released
In an attempt to mitigate the damage caused by the controversy, Mo Elmasri took the initiative to issue a public apology on Janet Jackson’s behalf to media outlets.
“Janet Jackson would like to clarify her recent comments. She recognizes that her statements regarding Vice President Kamala Harris’ racial identity were based on misinformation," read the statement, which sought to clarify the singer’s remarks.
"Janet respects Harris’ dual heritage as both Black and Indian and apologizes for any confusion caused,” Elmasri continued.
“Janet remains committed to promoting unity and understanding,” he added.
Janet Jackson’s official response
Shortly after the apology was made public, a representative for Janet Jackson stated that Mo Elmasri was not authorized to release such an apology statement, according to People.
The representative further clarified that Elmasri was not Jackson’s manager nor affiliated with her campaign.
It was also revealed that the singer’s brother, Randy Jackson, manages her career.
