OXFORD, MISSISSIPPI: JD Vance said he hopes his wife, Usha Vance, will one day feel moved by the Catholic Church and choose to embrace Christianity. Usha was raised in a Hindu household.

Speaking at a Turning Point USA (TPUSA) event at the University of Mississippi on Wednesday, October 29, Vance shared his thoughts in front of students, reflecting on his own faith journey. “Do I hope, eventually, that she is somehow moved by the same thing that moved me in church?” he asked.

Vance’s remarks highlighted how the couple navigates differences in faith and family life. The comments were met with applause from the conservative audience.

While speaking with the university students, Vance elaborated, “Yeah, I honestly do wish that because I believe in the Christian gospel, and I hope eventually my wife comes to see it the same way.” When asked whether Usha would eventually “come to Christ,” he clarified that their differing faiths have never caused tension at home.

“But if she doesn’t, then God says everybody has free will, and so that doesn’t cause a problem for me. That’s something you work out with your friends, with your family, with the person that you love,” he said. Faith, he stressed, remains central to his message.

JD Vance emphasizes Christian values as family and national foundation

Vance also addressed the role of Christianity in American life. “I make no apologies for thinking that Christian values are an important foundation of this country,” he said, responding to a question about church and state. “Anybody who says their view is neutral likely has an agenda. I’m at least honest about thinking the Christian foundation of this country is a good thing."

Beyond faith, Vance engaged with students on policy issues, stepping into a role previously held by TPUSA founder Charlie Kirk. On immigration, he called for a slowdown in legal immigration, saying, “We have to get the overall numbers way, way down.” He stressed that immigration policy should balance economic priorities with broader national interests.
