WASHINGTON, DC: Jeff Bezos decided to block The Washington Post's endorsement of Democratic nominee Kamala Harris for president, per the Daily Beast.

The outlet reported that publisher Will Lewis fought the Amazon founder "tooth and nail" to prevent him from suppressing the prepared editorial endorsing Kamala Harris for the 2024 race.

The Washington Post's most senior opinion columnists, on Friday, October 25, criticized Jeff Bezos for blocking publication of the Kamala Harris endorsement editorial at a time when GOP rival Donald Trump's positions "directly threaten freedom of the press and the values of the Constitution".

They wrote, "The Washington Post’s decision not to make an endorsement in the presidential campaign is a terrible mistake. It represents an abandonment of the fundamental editorial convictions of the newspaper that we love, and for which we have worked a combined 218 years."

They added, "This is a moment for the institution to be making clear its commitment to democratic values, the rule of law and international alliances, and the threat that Donald Trump poses to them — the precise points The Post made in endorsing Trump’s opponents in 2016 and 2020."

“Will Lewis fought tooth and nail against this,” a source said. “He argued with Bezos.”

Bezos bought The Washington Post from the storied Graham family in 2013. He prevented the newspaper from stating its position in one of the most consequential US elections in history.

The Washington Post since 1976 had regularly endorsed presidential candidates, except for the 1988 race, and all the endorsements had been for Democrats, per CNBC.

The Washington Post's chief communications officer Kathy Baird said in a statement to CNBC when asked about Bezos’ purported role in killing the endorsement, "This was a Washington Post decision to not endorse, and I would refer you to the publisher’s statement in full."
