Jennifer Garner reveals her intense workout for Elektra role in 'Deadpool & Wolverine'
Her routine included a mix of boxing three times a week, Peloton rides, and high-intensity interval training (HIIT).
The mother-of-three, who shares her children with ex-husband Ben Affleck, humorously noted that she hadn't picked up Elektra's iconic sais since 2004, apart from trying to convince her kids' preschool buddies that she was secretly a ninja.
To prepare for the demanding role, Garner and her longtime stunt double, Shauna Duggins, ramped up their training under the guidance of fitness expert Beth Nicely at The Limit Fit.
Garner's schedule was intense, featuring daily workouts and additional exercises as "homework."
Her routine also included sessions with boxing coach Flvco The Future from Matchroom X Churchill Gym and frequent rides with Peloton instructor Becs Gentry.
Reflecting on the summer of training, Garner said, "We had #SuperHeroSummer over here, twirling sais in the backyard and laughing at our sore old bodies."
Garner revealed that the idea for her cameo in 'Deadpool & Wolverine' came from a moment of inspiration between director Shawn Levy and star Ryan Reynolds.
The duo, known for their "crazy artistic kismet," exchanged a look that conveyed "an idea, 20 pages of dialogue, nuclear codes." This moment led to Garner's return as Elektra, a role she hadn't played in nearly two decades.
Reflecting on the experience, Garner expressed gratitude for the opportunity, noting, "I didn’t know that Elektra and I needed an ending, but Shawn and Ryan did. They are gifted in many ways, but seeing and elevating people around them is at the top of the list."
Garner described the filming of the fight scenes as "truly like a dream," and expressed her appreciation for being part of such a special project, saying, "I’m proud of my friends and grateful to be up there with them. Thank you doesn’t cut it, guys, but it’s a good placeholder until I figure out what does."
'Deadpool & Wolverine' premiered in theaters on July 26 and quickly became a box office hit, earning $205 million domestically and $233.3 million internationally.
