Joe Biden to propose constitutional amendment aimed at reversing presidential immunity ruling next week

Despite Joe Biden's plans, many social media users were skeptical about the feasibility and impact of these reforms before the end of his term

WASHINGTON, DC: President Joe Biden is expected to propose amendments to the US Constitution on Monday, July 29, in line with his plans to reform the Supreme Court, reported Fox News.

Though the incumbent has long resisted changes to the highest court of the land, he has shifted his stance since he suspended his reelection campaign last week. On Wednesday, July 24, Biden reportedly announced that the reform of SCOTUS would be among his top priorities for the remainder of his term in office.

What proposals concerning SCOTUS are expected of Joe Biden?

Biden is likely to propose setting term limits for Supreme Court justices, which would require a constitutional amendment. He is also expected to push for establishing an enforceable code of ethics, which could be enacted by Congress.

In response to the Supreme Court's July 1 ruling that provided presidents complete immunity from prosecution for “official acts” during their time in office, Biden is further expected to announce his support for a constitutional amendment that would limit immunity for presidents and certain other officeholders.

According to Politico, the specifics of the proposal have not been clarified by White House officials and are still subject to change. Biden is expected to make his announcement during a trip to Texas, where he will be speaking at the Lyndon Baines Johnson Presidential Library in Austin.

Joe Biden's growing criticism of Supreme Court

The president has been increasingly critical of the Supreme Court, stating in a public remark following its immunity ruling in the Donald Trump case, "This decision today has continued the court’s attack in recent years on a wide range of long-established legal principles in our nation, from gutting voting rights and civil rights to taking away a woman’s right to choose, to today’s decision that undermines the rule of law of this nation."

During his Oval Office address on Wednesday, July 24, where he explained his decision to drop out of the presidential race, Biden said that he would "call for Supreme Court reform" in his remaining days in office, "because this is critical to our democracy."

Internet refuses to pay heed to proposals

Netizens reacting to the news on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) refused to believe Biden's push for SCOTUS reform would amount to anything before the end of his term. The following tweets demonstrate the prevalent take on the platform.

"Never gonna happen," wrote a user.

"Good luck with that Joe," mocked another.

"Good news is he only works like 30 minutes a day, so not likely to get much done," jibed a third.

"He forgot already," quipped a fourth.

"Good luck with that. Waste of time and money," expressed a fifth.

"Not going anyplace. Election talk," observed yet another.

"One last failure on the way out," chided a seventh user.
