WASHINGTON, DC: Senator John Fetterman, the outspoken Pennsylvania Democrat, has emerged as a staunch defender of President Joe Biden amid a chorus of calls from some Democrats urging the president to bow out of the 2024 presidential race.

These calls intensified following Biden’s debate with former President Donald Trump on Thursday, June 27, a performance that left many questioning his ability to continue leading the party, as reported by Newsweek.

Biden, 81, found himself under scrutiny after a debate performance where he appeared to be halting and occasionally mumbled, raising concerns about his age and health.

A Biden aide later clarified to Newsweek that the president was suffering from a cold during the debate, which contributed to his less-than-stellar performance.

However, this explanation did little to quell the anxiety among some Democratic supporters. Former Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill expressed her dismay on MSNBC, saying, "My heart is breaking," and questioned whether anything could be done to improve Biden's situation.

Meanwhile, political strategist Steve Schmidt took to X to declare Biden’s performance a failure, suggesting that the president should step aside for the sake of democracy.

"Joe Biden lost the country tonight, and will not get it back. If Trump is a threat and democracy is on the line, then Biden must step aside. His duty, oath and legacy require an act of humility and selflessness," Schmidt penned.

In the wake of these critiques, Fetterman took to X to vehemently oppose the calls for Biden to drop out of the race. Drawing on his own experience from a challenging debate during his Senate race in 2022, Fetterman urged patience and support for Biden.

"I refuse to join the Democratic vultures on Biden’s shoulder after the debate. No one knows more than me that a rough debate is not the sum total of the person and their record," Fetterman expressed.

"Morning-after thermonuclear beat downs from my race from the debate and polling geniuses like 538 predicted I’d lose by 2. And what happened? The only seat to flip and won by a historic margin (+5). Chill the f**k out," Fetterman asserted in another X post.

Despite the growing calls for Biden to reconsider his candidacy, the path to replacing him on the Democratic ticket remains uncertain. His confirmation as the party's 2024 candidate is expected to occur at the Democratic National Committee in Chicago this August.
