NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: A new report has disclosed that Joy Reid was terminated from her job by MSNBC despite her ratings being up.

Reid, 56, who began working with MSNBC in 2011, was the host of her show ‘The ReidOut’.

However, she was fired in late February and at the time, MSNBC President Rebecca Kutler said, as per NPR, “Joy Reid is leaving the network and we thank her for her countless contributions over the years.”

The liberal-leaning network’s management team has not clarified the reason behind Joy Reid’s firing.

Now, the Daily Beast citing the audience ratings collected by Nielsen, an American media audience measurement firm, reported that the TV host was not experiencing ratings decline.

It noted that the data showed that her show along with other primetime line-ups were witnessing an increase in popularity.

Though Reid faced difficult times between January and June 2024 being the lowest-rated primetime host, things changed for good throughout July and August 2024, when her show received an average of 2 million viewers in August.

Even September and October of the last year were good for Reid as she beat ‘Inside with Jen Psaki’ and ‘Alex Wagner Tonight’.

Not only that, the political commentator also left behind CNN's 'Erin Burnett Outfront'.

Joy Reid along with her peers saw declining ratings after election

The publication citing the data added that after the election, ratings plunged for every MSNBC primetime host, but Reid was not very far behind her colleagues.

Ari Melber faced a 42 percent (1.552 million vs. 903,000) decline between November 6 and February end from their 2024 pre-election ratings, Chris Hayes experienced a 45 percent decline, which was 1.496 million vs. 820,000, while Reid’s was 1.421 million vs. 825,000.

Though Reid did not share any statement with the Daily Beast regarding her firing, she joined Substack.

On March 6, she declared, “Let’s keep working our way through the madness. Together, we will win. And we will keep fighting the bastards until we do. I’ll be right here with you with my boxing gloves on.”

Netizens hail Joy Reid’s firing

Meanwhile, people online have reacted to Joy Reid’s termination as one Reddit user said, “They should have fired her years ago (8 or so years at this point?) when it came out she used to have a blog that regularly posted homophobic s**t.”

Another Reddit user commented, “To be fair, show's like Joy Reid's are bad for the people who watch them and the discourse at large. Her show and ones like it is poison to society. She makes Rush Limbaugh seem tame.”

“Someone's remote battery died while switching channels and her ratings doubled,” a third one sarcastically wrote.

A person shared, “No they weren’t. The whole channel was dying. That’s why it was broken off from the profitable parts of the business.”

Another one stated, “She’s a racist. Who cares.”

“She used to get like 40,000-60,000 views in her target demographic—those numbers are abysmal,” a comment read.
