Cops who arrested Justin Timberlake for DWI let drinking pal drive his car to her home, claims report
SAG HARBOR, LONG ISLAND: After Justin Timberlake’s DWI arrest in the Hamptons last month, it has emerged that his drinking companion returned to Sag Harbor, the site of the arrest, and offered to drive his rental car to her residence after Timberlake was taken into custody.
The 43-year-old 'Mirrors' singer, who is currently on 'The Forget Tomorrow World Tour,' was pulled over in the Hamptons for running a stop sign and drifting out of his lane.
Justin Timberlake's DUI arrest details intoxicated driving and traffic violations
Court records reveal that Justin Timberlake was pulled over in Sag Harbor, Long Island, just after midnight on June 18. He was charged with driving while intoxicated and cited for failing to stop at a stop sign and for lane violations.
According to TMZ, despite being intoxicated herself, the unnamed woman who had been drinking with the 'My Love' singer that evening drove his rental car to her home after Timberlake's arrest.
Sources report that the woman asked the arresting officer, "Are you going to arrest Justin Timberlake?"
She suggested taking the singer to her home so he could spend the night and sober up. However, the officer denied her request to release Timberlake, according to the New York Post.
Instead, she asked if she could drive Timberlake’s rental car to her place since he was being taken to jail, according to the report.
Despite her alleged intoxication, the officers permitted her to drive the rental car.
Justin Timberlake's lawyer, Edward Burke Jr, is reportedly seeking to have the case dismissed. He plans to argue that the two young officers showed poor judgment by allowing the woman to drive after she had been drinking.
Burke is reportedly preparing to present this argument to the judge as part of his motion to have the case dismissed, the outlet adds.
It is noteworthy to mention, that the singer claimed to have only had one cocktail at the American Hotel in Sag Harbor before his arrest.
Timberlake's lawyer claims singer was not under influence
On July 26, Justin Timberlake's lawyer asserted that the singer was not under the influence when he was arrested for DUI in the Hamptons in June.
At a procedural conference, Sag Harbor Village Justice Carl Irace ordered Timberlake to be re-arraigned on August 2 with the corrected paperwork, according to CBS News.
In a statement to CBS New York, Burke accused the police of making "a number of very significant errors in this case" and "we are confident that this charge will be dismissed."
Timberlake's lawyer, Edward Burke, told reporters, "He was not intoxicated. I'll say it again. Justin Timberlake was not intoxicated."
"The most important fact to know about this case is that Justin was not intoxicated and should not have been arrested for DWI," Burke's statement read.
He continued adding that Timberlake "cooperated with the police officers at all times and treated them with the respect they deserve."
Timberlake was not present in court on July 26. Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney's office referred to the paperwork issue as a "ministerial error" in a statement to the Associated Press, noting that a revised charging document was submitted on July 2.
"The facts and circumstance of the case have not been changed or amended," spokesperson Emily O'Neil said in an email to the AP.
