PHOENIX, ARIZONA: Vice President Kamala Harris faced quite a backlash on social media after making a big statement about creating “pathways for citizenship” for certain groups of illegal immigrants.

Harris is pushing for ways to help people brought to the US as children — along with migrant farm workers — find a way to stay here legally. But as you can imagine, not everyone was thrilled about it.

Harris, 59, made these comments during her first official visit to the US-Mexico border since she became Vice President more than three years ago. With election day just around the corner – less than 40 days to be exact – she may be trying to portray a tough-on-the-border stance.

Kamala Harris’ border promises

During her visit to Cochise County — where she toured part of the border wall — Kamala Harris addressed the nation’s border policies. "The United States is a sovereign nation, and I believe we have a duty to set rules at our border and to enforce them,” Harris told the crowd at a rally. “And I take that responsibility very seriously."

She’s also planning to build on President Joe Biden’s previous efforts. In June, Biden announced an executive order that made it harder for migrants who cross the border illegally to apply for asylum.

Harris said she would “do more to secure our border, to reduce illegal border crossings," adding, “I will take further action to keep the border closed between ports of entry."

The veep insisted that those crossing the border unlawfully would face immediate consequences. "Those who cross our borders unlawfully will be apprehended and removed and barred from re-entering for five years," she said.

“We will pursue more severe criminal charges against repeat violators, and if someone does not make an asylum request at a legal point of entry, and instead crosses our border unlawfully, they will be barred from receiving asylum," the California Democrat pledged.

However, Harris raised eyebrows when she simultaneously pushed for reforms for certain groups of undocumented immigrants. “I reject the false choice that suggests we must either choose between securing our border or creating a system of immigration that is safe, orderly, and humane,” she said. “We can, and we must, do both."

Harris specifically mentioned that she wants to work with Congress to make it easier for immigrants who have been in the US for years — especially those brought here as children and migrant farm workers — to become citizens.

"As president, I will work with Congress to create, at long last, a pathway to citizenship for hard-working immigrants who have been here for years, for years, and deserve to have a system that works," she promised.

Of course, Harris didn’t miss a chance to take a swipe at former president Donald Trump. She accused him of “sabotage” for opposing a Senate border bill over the summer and declared that if elected, she’ll “bring it back up and proudly sign into law."

Kamala Harris faced major backlash on social media

Social media lashed out at Kamala Harris over her comments. Some people felt that her proposal for a “pathway to citizenship” was a way to encourage even more illegal immigration.

"Kamala Harris just encouraged millions of more illegal immigrants to invade our country," one user posted on X.

"This was her plan all along. To import new voters and create a one-party [country] where Democrats never lose," a second user alleged.

"People who snuck in years ago 'deserve to have a system that works.' They deserve to be in jail!" another fumed.

"She is contradicting herself by saying she’s going to protect our sovereignty, but give illegals free amnesty," read a comment.

"Kamala was tasked 3.5 years ago to fix the border. She is a pathological liar," someone else offered.

"I honestly don’t think I’ll ever be able to hate a person as much as I hate her," another added.
