GLENDALE, ARIZONA: GOP Senate hopeful Kari Lake was trolled on social media on Friday, August 23, after images surfaced showing her being urged to leave the stage at a rally for former President Donald Trump.

The incident quickly became a target for mockery, spearheaded by her Democratic opponent, Representative Ruben Gallego.

Kari Lake asked to 'get off the stage'

Kari Lake was one of the speakers at a rally in Glendale, Arizona, where the former president was the main attraction. However, an image posted by Gallego on X (formerly Twitter) late that night captured a rather embarrassing moment for Lake.

The photo showed Lake from behind as she stood near a teleprompter, which had a message displayed on the screen that read, "Please get off stage. Trump waiting."

Gallego—a sitting US Congressman and Democratic candidate for the Senate—seized the opportunity to poke fun at Lake. "MAGA Republicans finally catching up to the rest of Arizona. @KariLake," he posted on X.

Among those who piled on to the trolling was Representative Wiley Nickel, a Democrat from North Carolina. Nickel replied to Gallego’s post with a laughing emoji, adding, "This is a photo of MAGA extremist Kari Lake being told by Trump to get off the stage! The #AZSenchoice is crystal clear. We need @RubenGallego in the US Senate."

Another notable reaction came from Meghan McCain, daughter of the late Arizona Senator John McCain. Having previously clashed with Lake on X, McCain couldn’t resist laughing at the image.

According to Newsweek, McCain's animosity toward Lake stems from the latter's repeated attacks on her father during her unsuccessful 2022 campaign for Arizona governor.

At a rally in November 2022, Lake famously said, "We don't have any McCain Republicans in here, do we? Get the hell out!"

In February 2023, Lake attempted to dismiss her comments as a joke during an interview with an Arizona radio station. However, the damage had already been done, and McCain's disdain for Lake has been apparent ever since.

Further mockery on social media

The teleprompter images sparked further trolling from other social media users, with some suggesting that even Donald Trump supporters were growing tired of her.

"Even Trump supporters are tired of her. She's down 11 points to Ruben. What a loser!" one posted on X.

"Something we can all agree with. The less of Lake talking, the better," another wrote.

"The level of disrespect is off the charts," a third user added.

"That’s a bit of unexpected stage direction! Looks like even the teleprompter had its own agenda," someone else quipped.

"I have often wondered where the teleprompters are. Kari Lake and the Trump Campaign are not going to be very pleased by this," a comment read.

"We've been telling her to get the hell off the stage for years now...but she's like a bad virus (hard to get rid of)," another chimed in.

Kari Lake's controversial Senate bid

It’s well-known that Kari Lake is a 2020 election denier. She is expected to face off against Gallego—a five-term US Congressman and former Marine who served in Iraq—in the November election for the US Senate seat currently held by Senator Kyrsten Sinema.

Sinema is not seeking reelection after switching her affiliation from Democrat to Independent.

Meanwhile, Lake’s career has been marked by her close alignment with Trump and her refusal to accept the results of the 2020 presidential election. After losing the Arizona governor’s race in 2022 to Democrat Katie Hobbs, Lake declared that the election had been stolen.

During her speech on Friday, Lake told the crowd, "I'm extremely worried about what my opponent Ruben Gallego will do to the state we love. I'm running against the most radical man to ever run for office in Arizona history."

However, Gallego has positioned himself as a candidate focused on unity and common ground. Earlier in August, he announced the formation of a coalition of 40 Arizona Republicans and independents who are backing his Senate bid.

"I am running for the US Senate to represent all Arizonans, regardless of where they live or what political party they align themselves with," Gallego said. "We may not agree on everything, but we can find common ground on one essential goal: building a better Arizona."
