NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: The Department of Justice has reportedly terminated Maurene Comey, daughter of former FBI Director James Comey, from her post as a federal prosecutor with the Southern District of New York.

This drew applause from far-right commentator Laura Loomer, who claimed her advocacy prompted the firing.

Maurene Comey, who gained national attention for leading the prosecution of Ghislaine Maxwell and, more recently, Sean “Diddy” Combs, was let go on Wednesday, July 16, under circumstances that remain unclear.

The US Attorney’s Office and the DOJ have not provided an official explanation.

Laura Loomer wasted no time in celebrating the firing. On X (formerly Twitter), she attributed the DOJ’s decision to what she called her “pressure campaign” on Attorney General Pam Bondi. “This comes 2 months after my pressure campaign on Pam Blondi to fire Comey’s daughter and Comey’s son-in-law from the DOJ,” she posted.

In May, Loomer publicly demanded the dismissal of both Maurene Comey and her husband, Lucas Issacharoff, an Assistant US Attorney in the DOJ’s civil rights division. She accused the couple of posing a national security risk due to their ties to former FBI chief James Comey, a frequent target of Trump allies.

Loomer met with Donald Trump earlier this year and urged him to fire disloyal National Security Council staff, and several were later removed.

Asked recently how much influence she has had on Trump’s personnel decisions, Loomer told The New York Times, “I don’t even know,” before adding, “I really enjoy and take great pleasure in humiliating people who suck at their job.”

Donald Trump’s DOJ ousts Epstein prosecutor Maurene Comey, daughter of Ex-FBI Chief

The Department of Justice under Attorney General Pam Bondi has reportedly dismissed Maurene Comey, a prominent Manhattan federal prosecutor and daughter of former FBI Director James Comey. The younger Comey is best known for her work on high-profile cases involving Jeffrey Epstein, Ghislaine Maxwell, and rapper Sean 'Diddy' Combs.

The firing comes amid escalating public frustration over what critics view as a backpedal by the Trump administration on transparency regarding Epstein’s alleged network of powerful clients.

Sources familiar with the matter said that Trump had long expressed discomfort with having Comey in his ranks, referencing the elder Comey’s role in the Russia investigation that overshadowed his first term.

Maurene Comey’s departure rekindles Epstein file controversy

Maurene Comey’s termination has sparked outrage across political and legal circles, particularly given her role in prosecuting Ghislaine Maxwell, who was convicted of sex trafficking in 2021.

Comey successfully secured a conviction against Maxwell on five of six counts, leading to her 20-year prison sentence.

However, Comey’s more recent legal actions have also drawn scrutiny. In early 2024, she filed a declaration in federal court opposing the public release of documents tied to the Epstein investigation.

She argued that making the material public, which includes witness statements and other sensitive records, could compromise any future retrials involving Maxwell or other unnamed individuals.

Donald Trump responds

Donald Trump, responding to the uproar over the Epstein files, bizarrely claimed that the documents were fabricated by a trio of adversaries: former FBI Director James Comey, former President Barack Obama, and the Biden administration.

“The credible information has been given and suggesting that some of the content in the files could have been fabricated by past administrations, including former FBI Director James Comey, former President Barack Obama, and the Biden administration.”

He doubled down on the conspiracy, dragging President Joe Biden into the mix and insisting that the trio “made up” the Epstein documents.

Trump added, “I don’t understand why the Jeffrey Epstein case would be of interest to anybody. It’s pretty boring stuff. It’s sordid, but it’s boring, and I don’t understand why it keeps going. I think really only pretty bad people, including fake news, want to keep something like that going.”

None of these claims is supported by evidence.

Trump’s reaction has only heightened criticism from conservatives and independents alike, many of whom are demanding full transparency on Epstein’s client list, a campaign promise Trump has yet to fulfill.
