WASHINGTON, DC: Congresswoman Lauren Boebert's clumsy attempt at making the sign of the cross during a fiery House hearing drew widespread mockery online, with social media users ridiculing her for botching the sacred Christian ritual.

The Colorado Republican's viral display of faith occurred amid a heated exchange between her colleagues Marjorie Taylor Greene and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Thursday, May 16, as reported by The Raw Story.

Seated between the clashing congresswomen during Thursday’s House Oversight Committee hearing, Boebert made an attempt at crossing herself.

The hearing, initially intended to discuss potential contempt proceedings against Attorney General Merrick Garland for withholding audio tapes related to an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, was overshadowed by a confrontation between Greene and Ocasio-Cortez.

During the fiery exchange, Greene taunted Ocasio-Cortez with, "Are your feelings hurt?" to which she retorted, "Oh girl, baby girl! Don’t even play!" Amid the chaos, Boebert’s attempt at the cross gesture was less than graceful.

The traditional Christian gesture of crossing oneself is rooted in ancient origins, symbolizing a plea for blessing or protection. It involves touching the forehead, breast, and shoulders in a specific sequence to signify the five wounds of Jesus Christ.

However, Boebert’s version left out the vertical motion, proceeding directly to crossing the shoulders.

Boebert, no stranger to media attention, had recently made headlines for her vocal support of former President Donald Trump during his hush-money trial in Manhattan. She was notably absent from her own son Tyler's court appearances, despite his serious legal troubles.

In February, Tyler was apprehended on numerous felony charges, including possessing identity documents unlawfully, trespassing criminally, and having a financial device in his possession.

Lauren Boebert's failed attempt at cross gesture draws mockery online

Social media users were quick to poke fun at Boebert's failed attempt at the cross gesture. One X user quipped, "Yeah, she mixed it up with the Macarena," referring to the popular dance move from the 1990s.

Another remarked, "She missed the second step, where dignity and decency resides." "She's her own sad comedy hour every single day," a third user wrote. Someone expressed, "Her son could have used a few of her prayers."

"She didn't touch her heart because she doesn't have one," another user stated. Criticism also extended to Boebert's constituents, with one user writing, "The only thing dumber than Lauren Boebert is the #CO3 voters who chose her to represent them in Congress."

Yet another user mentioned, "This is what happens when performative Christianity meets utter ignorance." Someone else wrote, "If you feel the need to flaunt your faith, you’re likely a fraud. Case in point."
